I agree that it's very convenient. The benefit of the Microsoft Reader -> ConvertLit -> Mobi Creator book creation route is that it gives you a book that you're guaranteed to be able to read on any future reading device, rather than one that's "locked" to your specific Kindle.

The reason I prefer to use Mobi Creator is that it gives you a very easy way of checking and, if necessary, correcting, the metadata as a part of the creation process. Nothing that you can't also do with the perl tools, certainly, but more convenient if you're a Windows user.

If I am not mistaken, AZW1 is this Topaz format which is not DRM breakable at the moment.

However, Is this option available for Dictionaries?
From What I understand, not, and so for people on Kindles, it does leave them in the lurch as to alternatives suppliers other than Amazon.

The Kindle has helped to get eBooks into the attention of a lot of people who have not before known about them. But, I do feel that rushing out and purchasing a Kindle without looking into the other eink readers is a bad idea. Looking at the different devices and then deciding what is the right device for your usage is the best thing to do.

One thing I think is if any of these new 9.7" eink screen devices is cheap enough, the battery live is good enough and the software is good enough, it could spell big trouble for the 6" devices.

You are not limited to purchasing eBooks at any one store since it is fairly easy to remove the DRM of some eBooks and convert to work with given device. I did that earlier today and it took less then 5 min to go from DRM protected to DRM free LRF installed on my 505.

No - I said that about three posts up in this thread, if you look .

I did see that, but was more refering to the Convert Lit rout then the Kindle PID route.

While for most other books, you can buy LIt and strip the drm to 'roll your own' Mobi books, Don't think that works for Dictionaries. As such there is no alternative, not just easily

Oh sorry, I see what you're saying. I have to admit that I wasn't even aware that Microsoft Reader supported dictionaries, so it wouldn't have occurred to me to look for a dictionary in Reader format! My Mobi dictionary is the one thing I've bought in Mobi format rather than going down the "ConvertLIT" route. I don't think, though, that even Mobi dictionaries work on the Kindle.

I wasn't either until I was browsing around Fictionwise and Booksonboard, pricing out the different books I want to buy, once my book budget recovers from the Gen3 Purchase . Saw a few of the dictionaries available for secure Mobipocket and MS Lit.

Until then I'm using the GCIDE dictionary that's available for free.

But I think a few people have tried using the GCIDE or other dictionaries in the kindle, but it appears that it will only accept one dictionary at a time, so you need to replace the one that is already on it. But that's just conjecture and half remembered posts on my part .

Perhaps someone with a kindle, who has actually tried putting ina new dictionary could comment on it.

Portability will keep the 6" screens popular. Personally, I like a larger screen but devices larger than the Kindle aren't nearly as portable. The Kindle just fits into my purse/tote for reading on the go. A 9" device would require a significantly larger purse/tote which means more bulk so it would be less likely to be toted around.

I'd love a rugged eInk device with a foldable 9" screen with a built in light that I could easily slip into my purse.

It is possible to add DRM-free dictionaries to the Kindle, but only one can act as the "primary" dictionary at a time.

Just yersterday I came across Encarta Dictionary on Mobipocket Reader, which shows how to get a LIT dictionary into MOBI format.

Harry, I never figured out that Fictionwise club pricing stuff. I did get free bucks from the Micropay thing a few times but that is it. Don't you have to pay a yearly price to get the club price?

Yes, you have to "join the club"... which you have to pay for.. sort of like the B&N book club.
