Your maths is a little lacking.

A speed increase of 30% in the first generation, and another 30% in the second, is a total speed increase of 1.3 x 1.3 = 1.69. ie a 69% total increase.

I'm interested, but in no hurry to upgrade. I had a Paperwhite, but lost it, so I downgraded to a used Kindle Keyboard. I do miss the light, but I like that my KK plays audio, and my Settlers of Catan app plays on it. I'm fairly disinclined to upgrade when what I have still works.I was tempted to ask for a Paperwhite for Christmas, but with the new model coming out, I may hold off, and wait until the price drops on the new model. If I do get a new model, I may leave my KK at work. I like to use it on the treadmill, and it would be nice to not have to remember to take it home with me.

So in a sense one could say that even the book light has failed to add enough value to the kindle to make an upgrade to the middle model a viable option.

I am not upgrading within the Amazon walled garden because Kobo came out with a water resistant unit and Amazon didn't. I am not stuck (thanks to Calibe and Alf) in their ecosystem.

This is kind of a side question, but I'm curious -- do most (many) people here usually upgrade their Kindles when Amazon comes out with a new model? That might be a good subject for a poll.

For me it usually depends on what the new features are, the only real exception to that was the pw2 and I didn't pre-order that one either.

Kindle keyboard - moved for the convenience of the bookstore from my sony when the new sony at the time didn't impress me.
Touch - skipped due to lack of pageturn buttons
PW1 - light offset the lack of pageturn buttons
PW2 - decided to get one in a sale and pass on my pw1 to my sister
Voyage - higher rez screen and return of page turn 'buttons' sold me on this one.

I also do not upgrade with every new model. My K3 is still a good device and the battery is still good for 4 to 6 weeks on a charge, but the lack of internal lighting (as shown by my daughter's PW1) is moving me to an upgrade. While I have the lighted Kindle cover for the K3, it is far short of the internal lighting of the PW1.

I like the PW2, but knowing a new K was imminent, I decided to hold off for the K2014. Admittedly the Voyage price set me back in my seat for a few minutes, but I decided to hold my nose, close my eyes and hit the buy button anyway.

My touch and pw2 are great, so I can't justify the purchase at the moment. I'll wait to see how other folks review the new one. The truth is that I've bought every one since KK, so I may cave by the time it gets to Canada.

My Kindle PWI is perfect. I don't see any thing that the new model offers to be honest. And I am a gadget guy generally.

I have a PW1. It does it's job but I tend to upgrade even if I don't need to. I had decided this time to go with 3G because we spend a lot of our summer away from home on the weekends and no available/reliable wifi. It was important to have 3G this go round. However for a Voyage, a case, and a screen protector (anything glass has a screen protector in our house) I was looking at $364 for an ereader. In this day and age tha/ a lot of money for a one trick device.

Don't get me wrong: I have to have eink. We all know the benefits so I won't hash them out here. Instead I got a PW2 with 3G and a $20 case. It's still an upgrade but I'm trading in my PW1 to Amazon for $60 and taking that off the cost. It was much more palatable than what I was looking at for the Voyage! 😃

I agree, it would be an interesting poll. I usually upgrade every year.

I just cancelled my order. My two Kindles are more than enough to read eBooks. I didn't see anything that makes my current 2 obsolete.

I've upgraded every year through 2013 but I'm skipping this year.

I may go for a new HDX Kindle if it has big improvements. So far none has been announced.
