Yes, The "Amulet of Samarkand" is pretty good!
Now .. I wanted to recommend another book - but I forgot which one .. damn lack of sleep.

So perhaps this will become some middle manager's bright new idea at some point, the origins of which would be lost, were it not for this thread.

Regarding the social networking features, they kind of creep me out "in real life", too, but you know there is a demographic that would love it. So it would fill the bookstore with teenagers. Well, so what? Manga sells would go through the roof.
oh good, i'm glad you are at least lobbying in existing stores. you let me know how it goes. and don't dismiss manga lovers ; those people spend FORTUNES on books (i know a few).

i seem to remember that you had your own rather brilliant idea for a new style of bookstores, which would integrate a lot of community features. i don't remember which thread it was in (and i am too lazy to search for it right now) but perhaps you and taylor should get together, make a few powerpoints, and go meet up with the owners of border and whatever other bookstore chains you want.

try to do this soon, because i would like it if you could then rapidly export the model to Paris, so i can enjoy it as well.

Well, I'll be in Connecticut next week. Where should we meet?

Um... actually, I live in New Hampshire. I work days, though. Will you be around here over the weekend? It's not completely impossible... and it would be fun to meet.

I keep meaning to post a copy of my paper somewhere and ask for comments. Maybe later today. It's basically about promoting reading and reading communities with software like DotReader. (And the DotReader website seems to be back up again, so I guess they're not dead after all....)

My invitation was tongue-in-cheek. I'm flying to LGA, driving to CT, working 3 days, flying out Saturday.

How do I like to shop for books? At a book store.

Oh HELL YES!!! I remember walking into both Barnes & Noble and Borders years ago and asking them why I was unable to purchase ebooks at their stores. I would think they would have at least one terminal somewhere in the store that was specifically dedicated to that. If not why the hell not??

I love to shop in bookstores .... I like just walking around and looking at the physical books. I like the way bookstores smell, for pete's sake. I would like to be able to shop at book stores, but since I try whenever possible to purchase ebooks only now (which has more to do with scraping cat puke of the pages or finding pages my furry children have torn out and hidden under the couch, and scraping the cat puke off of those), I don't spend much money in those stores of late. I haven't since I got my first Rocket E Book.

<sniff> I'm devastated.

Yeah, I've had cats shred books, too, sharpening claws, I guess (or just generally making mischief). My brother gave me a paperback for Christmas this past year to replace a collection of short stories the cats destroyed 20 years ago. It was used, of course, and he wasn't happy with the condition it was in, but when I explained to him the condition of my other copy (which I still have for the 2/3 of the pages that are still readable) he decided it had been an ok gift after all.
