@BR even configured that way it gives me the cabinet file error.
This program reminds me of something I used to use back in the Netscape Communicator days. I'm going to disable every other addon but that one and try again. |

@eschwartz: I noticed that download.calibre doesn't allow https connections, just slightly before your post.

Update:
Something is interfering with the downloads. The MD5 hash I get using FDM from Fosshub differs from the MD5 hash I got when using FDM to download from the Default Calibre Download page. The MD5 hash I got using FDM from Fosshub is bc44849e4e352978ea7eb3fdba5d8bf4 The MD5 hash I got using FDM from calibre is d2df5871ebd968db9a9ccb21a7b29963 Another download using FDM generates 6803f0a78e7abbd386b2af015070ce1f. Hmmm. What gives? Even downloading the file with a different extension, and then renaming doesn't work (and generates a different hash). @gdp: I tried your suggestion downloading from Private mode. That gives me a hash of: d95b33fa0a3b0613a53f054932a2c844. WTF? ![]() |

Used a proxy, pretended to be in the UK; downloaded from the default download page; did not use FDM; and it generated this MD5: 2f430658f0f2fb3321d2fce72a37a35c. 2.1 64-bit installed and is running perfectly. Holding on to the other 10 or so downloads in case anyone wants them. Thank you guys. |

I note that the size of the calibre 64bit 2.1 download is the same size as the calibre 2.0 download, IIRC the same was true of 1.36 and 1.37
I suspect that's what's triggering the ISP to think its the same as last weeks - blithering idiots. Sure - on my Sun Sparc workstation, not on Wintel but BR Last edited by BetterRed; 08-29-2014 at 08:01 PM. |

Hmm...
Well, I've been following h.p with interest. Until a few moments ago, I still had not been able to download an x64 2.1 installer, though I have not tried the proxy trick. Certainly I started out using IDM, but gave up on that, and used Firefox, took forever, and produced the same result. Got a bit excited when h.p reported success using Chrome - big let down. Eventually I decided to use IE11, went to download.com, and told it to use the secure route. Couldn't believe it when the 64-bit Revision Number checked out (Thanks, @BetterRed, for that). Held my breath, and ran the installer. Allowed Calibre to start, and it identified itself as calibre 2.1 [64-bit]! Yay!!! ![]() Thanks to all who have contributed to this thread. Without the discussion, I'd not have realised I was somehow repeatedly ending up with the 2.0 installer package. I still do not know how this happened, and whether, when the time comes, I shall be able to download 2.2 without problems. I have always use Internet Download Manager for my downloads, and have never had a problem with it, but once I got past The specified account already exists, which only happend a few times right at the start, I started to detect warning messages from IDM telling me the download was corrupt. It really was the discussion which prompted me to try the download.com secure route, being aware that they keep their own copy of Calibre, so thanks again for your help. Now, I dare say, I shall just have to wait and see. Last edited by BeeTee-Ess; 08-29-2014 at 10:41 PM. |

Bee-Tee-Ess - do you normally download from download.com, because I suspect your problems are much more likely to be caused by them than by IDM.
Perhaps you use their software update gadget (the thing that tells you there is a new version of something). I would only ever use that service as a notifier, and do the actual downloads from originators site - eg calibre-ebook.com, piriform.com etc. It may take a bit longer because its an extra step, but its normally safer (no Open Candy or Bunndle crap to dodge) and the downloads are often faster, lots faster e.g. a calibre download fromm calibre-ebook.com usually max's out my line (16Mbs). My usual approach is quite straightforward. First, Internet Download Manager is a permanent resident in my system. Every Friday, I see the notification in Calibre to the effect that a new version is available. I then go to http://calibre-ebook.com/download, and download the installer package for the latest 64-bit version of Calibre. This process is automatically handled by IDM, which delivers the installer package to the same folder each week. I double-click the installer package, which automatically updates my copy of Calibre, and reloads the resulting upgraded copy so that I can confirm that all is well. I have been doing that without incident for some years now, until last Friday, when v2.1 arrived. I must have tried nearly a dozen attempts at variations on this theme, (using Firefox, Chrome, with and without IDM), with what purported to be v2.1 updates, but turned out to be v2.0 each time. I then stopped and watched the troubles h.p was having, until he eventually successfully used the proxy approach. It was that which gave me the idea to use download.com, as being completely different from my usual procedure - and it worked. Out of curiosity, I just downloaded v2.1 again, using my standard IDM procedure. Checking the Revision Number confirmed that I am still getting v2.0, even though the file is named calibre-64bit-2.1.0.msi. This does not instill a great deal of confidence that v2.2 will be without problems. Fingers crossed... Incidentally, I have used my standard IDM procedure to download a number of other packages over the last couple of days, and they were trouble-free. @BeeTee-Ess - your IDM process is the same as mine is with FDM, with one minor difference, I uncheck the run calibre now, so I can copy the msi to my installed software folder before I forget, and then I run calibre from the taskbar.
I also click the Advanced button on the License screen, I don't change anything (I turned off create desktop shortcut years ago) just like to know nothing's changed. But I would bet London to brick on, that me doing that would not make the slightest bit of difference, likewise with me not running calibre immediately after the install. I think Hidden.Platypus solved his similar issue by using a proxy, the issue seems to arise when successive calibre releases are the same size. It would seem that some blithering idiots configure their pipeline nodes to compare file sizes and sender location, and if they're similar then then they deliver what's in their cache with the new name. Hello out there that's why checksums were invented. The blithering idiot is almost certainly your ISP. Meantime line up a free proxy server in case you need it next week. The FoxyProxy add on (firefox), can be configured to always kick in for certain sites. I'm not sure if IDM is a beefed up FDM with a price tag, or if FDM is a reverse engineered IDM, but last time I looked at them side by side they were hard to differentiate. ![]() BR Last edited by BetterRed; 09-01-2014 at 02:59 AM. |
