Sorry for resurect, but just wondering, are there plans for an official portable version of Calibre (one that doesn't involve editing .bat files, plugins work, etc.)

Thanks.

There are no plans that I know of but if you are using windows you can use the calibre version at Portableapps.com. It's not official but it works.

It works, but not very well... On the other hand, I have been playing with PortableApps and Calibre, and have got mine working quite well. I just haven't uploaded it to PortableApps yet, as I was sorta waiting for v0.8.x before doing so.
Also, I have not yet created an install for it, since I didn't need one.
I have version 7.59 (the current version, I believe) working on my stick, and use a program called DSyncronize to keep it up to date, and to keep my library (on the stick, I never make changes except to what's on my hard drive, then update the stick!) synced...

Assuming Kovid will give me permission to do so, I will make the effort to complete the PortableApps version, with install, and get it made official on PortableApps.com

On the other hand, the only reason I went to that trouble was to have Calibre and the Ebook-Reader work within the PortableApps menu system. If that is NOT something you need or care about, the calibre-portable.bat is MUCH simpler to deal with. It helps to have some experience with Windows batch language, but it really is not necessary, read the file and it is pretty self explanitory.

In the license you agreed to Kovid granted you permission to go for it. You would be providing many folks a great service and since Kovid doesn't support any version that isn't released from his site or calibre's Sourceforge page you wouldn't be stepping on his toes.

Looking forward to seeing your 0.8 version on portableapps page.

I won't dispute that the license I agreed to gives me that permission, and I will go for it. But, I would still feel better if Kovid gave his explicit permission for that version, I will try to support the portable nature of it, but for support of Calibre issues I will no doubt end up directing people here.

Go for it, I have no objections to having calibre on portableapps, the only caveat being that I'd appreciate it if you did not change anything in the calibre code.

Perhaps one of the beautiful things about PortableApps, and Calibre, is that there is no code modification necessary.
It requires only that I take advantage of their system, and the things you have already built in to Calibre, and put it together.
But I do want to wait for v0.8 before I submit it to PortableApps.

An update:

With the metadata (Authors) bug in 0.8.0, and the fact that I didn't expect it to be out as quickly as it was, I have not yet gotten around to working on this.

However, with 0.8.1 out now, I should be able to devote some time to this in the next week (just in time, no doubt, for 0.8.2!).

Latest update:

I have posted the latest version (0.8.2) of Calibre as a PortableApp install on Sourceforge. The announcement for same can be found here https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...75#post1547175

Please try it out, and let me know in that thread, NOT HERE, if you have any issues. I will try to keep up with the releases from Kovid and the team, but I may skip a week now and then if there's nothing Earth shaking in the new release.

I will also try to get the PortableApps folks to pass on this as an official PortableApps release, once we are sure all the issues are worked out of the install and the PortableApps implementation.

I would like, here and now, to thank Kovid and the rest of developement team for all the work they have done, there was really not that much to do because they have made Calibre practically portable as is. To be quite honest, the PortableApps packaging is mostly just icing on the cake.

I have been informed by the PortableApps crew that prapper, the developer of the previously existing PortableApps version of Calibre is still working on the project, and has released newer versions, the latest being 0.8.2 (at http://sourceforge.net/projects/prap...Test_1.paf.exe ).
Therefore, obviously, there is no need for me to work on this as well.
I have removed the version I created from Sourceforge, and have ceased and desisted any further development of it.

Sorry for the inconvenience this may have caused.
