Yes it has room for lots of books but all Kindles have always slowed down when you get too many books on them.
The only thing that slows down when you put more books on a Kindle is global searches, because it has more to search. There's absolutely no speed difference whatsoever in any other function, and certainly none while reading.

Of course you have to check that it's not indexing but even so, my impression was that open and close were slower and forced restarts due to exceeding the trigger response time more frequent.

Kindle Keyboard with 2000 books.

@HarryT - thanks for correcting me when I used "backlit" to describe my new Kindle. Bad choice of words on my part since I was not only upgrading from my (unlit) Nook Simple Touch but also trying to get away from an actual backlit display on my Nexus 7 that wouldn't adjust low enough to prevent eye strain while reading in a dark room. The adjustability of the frontlit display is superb - so far it's comfortable under all lighting conditions.
