Looking at the books posted here, I don't understand this thread title.
Something along the lines of "Literary & Classic Fiction" would be more apt, imo. Are there any objections to changing this one or starting a new? |

X-link to the Historical Fic megathread, since it seemed a very suitable title for this one as well:
Free from the author via KDP Select @ Amazon: Vultures in the Wind by Peter Rimmer, historical literary drama set from 1960s-1990s South Africa about two friends of different races whose lives are affected by apartheid, out from HarperCollins in 1997 Free again from the author via KDP Select @ Amazon: Walking With Her Daughter by Jessica Barksdale Inclan, a literary fiction short about the grieving and recovery process. Inclan is a Penguin NAL author, who's made the NYT Bestseller lists a couple of times with her literary/women's fiction novels. When the life of Jenna's daughter is cut short in a matter of seconds, the forty-five-year-old professor must survive the grief that threatens to consume her, and come to terms with her relationship with her ex-husband and a newfound attraction to a younger colleague. And when events again take an unexpected turn, Jenna is blessed with another chance to correct the mistakes of the past, open her heart more fully, and embrace the fragility and miracle of life made new. |

Free from the author via KDP Select @ Amazon:
Frozen Music: 20th Anniversary Edition by Michael J. Vaughan, a literary fiction drama novel set amidst a choral, out in its original form from small press Northwest Pub in 1995. According to his bio-blurb, Vaughan is a professional musician and opera critic, as well as a competitions judge for Writer's Digest magazine. The more Michael Moss refuses to watch his conductor, Amy Fine, the more she becomes determined to make him watch. The ensuing battle of wills - and his curious flare for public soakings - threatens to pull Michael out of the deep freeze, and force him to exorcise Stacy Wilkes, the tempestuous alcoholic who turned his heart to stone. A 20th anniversary edition of the classic novel by the author of Gabriella's Voice and Operaville. Award Winner, 2014 San Francisco Book Festival. |

Free from the author @ Amazon (not KDP Select; this is apparently being price-matched to another store which is unfree in Canada, as far as I can tell):
Baby by Robert H. Lieberman (IMDB), who, if I've linked to the right guy, has directed quite a lot of TV produced in Canada (including an episode of The X-Files, though not one of the better ones, IMHO). Anyway, his novel is a quirky literary drama focused on eccentric characters (this comes with the subtitle "a haunting novel of obsession, cultism, and greed" on the cover image, which is apparently pulled from the quoted LA Times book review), originally out from Random House's Crown Publishing imprint in 1981. A page-turner that has received world-wide critical praise, “Baby” is the tale of aging Doris Rumsey, a hunched librarian who works in a middle school. Her health rapidly deteriorating, Doris is convinced she is dying, though it turns out this elderly woman is actually pregnant. Claiming that she has never been with a man, Doris ultimately gives birth in a field to a baby girl. And, from the moment of birth, the child can sing— and sing as no other human being has ever sung. This is the story of Baby and her other-worldly melody, of her fame, her exploitation, her kidnapping and the mother’s ultimate fate. It is a tale of modern day greed, lust and desire. Best-selling novelist and award-winning film director Robert H. Lieberman takes us into a highly original story with a cast of finely drawn characters. Talk about a phrase that means absolutely nothing.
By definition, a book is a page-turner. And world-wide critical praise means that at least one user (could even be a dog) from outside the US left a positive review on Amazon. |

Free from the author @ Amazon (not KDP Select, but being price-matched to some store which isn't free in Canada):
Goobersville Breakdown by Robert H. Lieberman (IMDB), another one of those quirky literary fiction novels chock-full of eccentric characters and their situations, this one originally out from Gamma Books in 1979. Best-selling novelist and award-winning film director Robert H. Lieberman takes readers on a hilarious, non-stop ride as they follow the mad travails of Neil Nudelman, down-and-out in Goobersville, New York. Desperate to support his wife and two children, Nudelman tries his hand at countless jobs, palming himself off as a carpenter, ghost writer for a wealthy businessman, and even attempts selling himself to the Chinese. At war with his bizarre neighbors the Szorsky’s, Nudelman contemplates justifiable homicide. Now in it’s fourth edition, the laughs are as fast and funny as ever, the pathos heart-breaking. Free again via small press start-up Stay Thirsty Media via KDP Select @ Amazon: The American Storybag: A Collection of Tales by award-winning folklorist and storyteller Gerald Hausman (Wikipedia), who's had books in print as far back as 1969 with such publishers as our old friend Stackpole (who used to give us rather nice weekly non-fiction freebies like clockwork) and many others. The cover on this says that it's a winner of the American Folklore Society Award. And also, it's a collection which includes a fair number of tales based on traditional Native American stories, which apparently Hausman is well-known for collecting and bringing to the public. The stories in THE AMERICAN STORYBAG are a fleeting yet incisive look at American life, primarily on the road, but sometimes on or in the water, and have been collected by Gerald Hausman since 1965. Some of the tales are very brief and may be called "sudden stories". Many of them deal with human survival - an autistic boy lost in a trackless swamp; a young woman who falls in love with a supernatural creature; a young man who finds himself by finding his horse. Some of the tales are mere messages left on a cell phone. Others, like the story "Bimini Blue" tell about a Navajo healing ceremony given to a famous author who committed suicide. There are stories of ghosts, demons, fearsome predators, and wise old men who take the innocent in hand and lead them on the road to wisdom. These are tales of innocence and anguish, fantasy and fable, humor and heart. In them we hear the voices of a lost America - an America of folk heroes fading fast from view and crying out to be heard. |

The last month with a general fiction & literature thread was May 2014. I notice that the threads now are not for a month, but for the year (2014). Is this a change in protocol? If so, I missed the discussion about it.

A new, more clearly and broadly titled General Fiction & Literature thread opened today. No titles are posted there yet. So, to prevent confusing overlap, I've emailed a mod to close that thread and rename this one with the newer, better title: "FREE/BARGAIN - General Fiction & Literature". FYI, I've posted a similar message at that thread as well as emailed the other thread's originator (GtrsRGr8) about this.
