I would say yes. Most diners here have vinyl covering the seats... which is probably what you meant too.

well, it's not quite vinyl... it's softer than that, and not so shiny. i don't know how to describe it, if you don't have it in your cafés. pleather is probably close enough. or possibly oilcloth.

It's probably some form of velveteen, the French having much more sensibility than Yanks when it comes to dining experiences. Velveteen used to be used on theater and diner seats before we discovered the joys of plastic coated seats that clean easily using Windex.

In UK English, Moleskin is a fabric: often cotton or a cotton mixture, with a raised nap. Corduroy also has a raised nap which runs in long lines. Moleskin is just a uniformly raised pile. Typically, it is more hard-wearing than velveteen, though the weave is similar. It was used for casual trousers to be worn in the country.

It's odd, because the Moleskine notebooks do not have a raised pile at all.

The cahiers do. I love the way they feel in hand. My current working notebook is the hard cardboard cover with elastic strap, but I'd prefer the softcover notebook. I get mine at Borders bookstore, and they don't seem to carry them.

thank GOD, i was beginning to get confused myself about what was moleskine in french. so it's like the really old café seats, which are sometimes a bit prickly if your legs are bare, not the medium old ones, which are smooth. also, in cafés it is almost invariably red.

Moleskin (when used as trousers, say) may be what is referred to (in the US) as chamois-cloth, that is, cloth that looks/feels like chamois without the dead animal skin.
