I will let my ex-wife use my extra ereader and use the new one for myself.

I actually just bought a Nook Glowlight, the old one with the SD card slot and buttons, I wanted those features and I got it for £49 and an official case from Nook for £5.

I now have 4 ereaders plus my iPad mini and my iPhone. I use all my readers as I have different types of books on each one. Plus I use my mini and iPhone for reading when traveling. I've come to realise that side loaded books on Kindles are a really pain so I'll use the nook and Kobo for those and my two Paperwhites for books I either buy from, or send to Amazon.

Going forward I'm at my limit now so if I buy a new Kindle I'd sell my PW1.

I just charge them once a month or every 2 at the latest.

I have a Kobo Mini, and Kindle Keyboard and a Paperwhite 2. I read on the Paperwhite and the kids read on the other 2 when they feel like it, which isn't very often .

I sort of have 2 backups now.

HTC One Max - 5.9" screen, so it's a huge phone, a small tablet or, if I'm away from home, a backup ereader.

At home I have a backup Kindle DX - I had one where the electronics were dodgy, bought a cheapo with a broken screen on ebay, and played swappies.

I have a Kindle as a backup to my Paperwhite. I also keep my 2 Sony 350's charged as backups to my backup. A bit much, I don't think so!

Arthritis makes it difficult to hold my hardcover / paperbacks for an extended length of time (but I do keep a few unread books, in case of an emergency!).

My backup reader is a paper book. I've got plenty laying around that I haven't read yet. And if my reader broke on vacation (SHUDDER), I would walk into a bookstore and buy a book.

I take it you don't holiday in non-English speaking countries much then?

The time I was most thankful that I had an e-reader was when I got stuck in Germany (an Icelandic volcano eruption grounded all flights). Buying English language books just wasn't an easy option but I did have hundreds of books on my e-reader to keep me happy.

My backup options are smartphone then printed book. I normally bring a book with me whenever I travel, just in case.

It's true that I haven't left the country in many years. But I have memories of finding great books in the limited selection of English books in other countries. I had to challenge myself to read something I wouldn't otherwise have picked, and once in a while I would find the best books that way. (slimmest pickings: the little leave-a-book/take-a-book pile at the youth hostel. There I found The English Patient by Ondaatje, and The Agony and The Ecstasy by Stone, both fantastic books).

When I was a kid I discovered Astrid Lindgren by raiding the English language books of the government-run tourist shop in central Stockholm. She has written many, many more books than Pippi Longstocking. Nowadays you can buy them all on Amazon, but in the late 70s, I think that shop in Stockholm was nearly the only place to find them.

Forgive my reminiscences of own reading history, but really the books I have found in other countries have a special place in my heart.
