Ross & I met on the bus. I lost my balance (happens to me a lot), spun round the pole I was holding onto (it was standing room only) and fell into another man's lap, much to his & my embarassment and everyone else's amusement. It was a conversation-point anyway - a few bus trips later we exchanged email addresses and a lot more after that he got up the courage to ask me on a date.
That was almost four years ago now. |

Picture it.....
A busy mall in Southern California. A busy mall, with a See's Candy counter facing mall foot traffic. Busy busy because its Valentines Day weekend. Usually us ladies have our heads down packing candy as fast as customers can tell us...I happen to look up and meet the most sparkly eyes of a handsome cop walking his 'beat' (THIS mall had problems, so they hired off duty cops to patrol) I didn't actually swoon, but boy did my heart go 'pitter pat'.....and guess what, his days/nights to work were the same as mine. One of See's most important policies is to offer each customer who walks up a free sample. Guess who got LOTS of free samples?? The rest, 20 yrs later this September, is history.
Free samples of CANDY people!!!! |

Hmmmm .... I'm not sure I have anyone at the moment. I haven't talked to him in ages and ages (ok ... not "ages" maybe two months), so my guess is he has a new lady in his life now and is probably worried about telling me.
But ... I met him at the gym in 1992. It was Superbowl Sunday, and we got to talking. He's an audio engineer and I have a tin ear, but we're both computer geeks, so we talked hard drives. We dated for about two and a half years, and then he dumped me. I proceeded to go all crazy stalker on his poor ass (for about a year), and then I got hold of myself, told the voices in my head to shut the hell up, and went on with my life. Then, sort of out of the blue he called me for some advice with regard to the lady he was dating. He was trying to figure out if she really liked him, or was just using him for his money. She was trying to get a singing career going, and wanted free studio time and money for singing coaches and ... well, you get the idea. So, I told him to tell her that he was willing to give her a no interest long term loan to help her. My thought was that if she said "thank you" ... she really cared more about him. If she told him to piss off, then she cared more about the money. She told him to piss off. Then, we started hanging around as friends. He dated other people, I dated other people, but every now and then, we'd travel somewhere together, or just go out to a movie or dinner and hang out. His parents and sister really wanted us to be together. His sister once called me from LA and told me that no matter who her brother was dating and no matter who he married, I was always going to be "her sister." His father and mother and I got along equally well. Then I told him I was moving to Texas. He was concerned that we would lose touch. I told him that they have telephones in Texas, and that we could still hang out when I went to California to work. Then, he became concerned that I'd meet someone in Texas and get married. Now, seeing as I am now 55 years old and have never even thought about getting married, that seemed like a bit of a stretch, but I think it had more to do with his father passing away soon after I moved. You know, the life changing reality check of loosing a parent. So, we've had a very long distance friendship with benefits for about 3 years now .... but I haven't been out to California for a few months, and I personally think we are floating back into being just plain friends. Which is fine with me. He's one of my dearest friends in the world, and I just want him to be happy. ![]() |

We have now been married for 29 years. My Mother passed before we started seeing each other and my Father passed a few months after we were married. Early on in the marriage she said that if we ever divorced, I got custody of her parents. They are both now 85 and in declining health. I have known and been around them more than I was my own parents; but in a far different dynamic. While there is a greater degree of separation with her parents than with my own, the pain will still be there.

Stupid Darts
Well, Where do I start, I was doing a training exercise in the Mountains of North Ga. It was only supposed to be a couple of weeks so they put us up at the Ranger camp that happened to be co-located on the campus of North Ga College and State University which was coincidently a military school. After about 2 days some buddies of mine and I decided to acquire a vehicle and see what was out in town, (A man can only eat so many MRE's) Of course the only place in town was the College Bar and Grill, We stopped in ordered some food and drinks and the guys proceeded to play Darts (to this day I have never thrown another Dart) Well they had seemed to find themselves partners from the available female population and I was the odd man out. Not to be out done I noticed that there was still a very lucky lady (at least in my mind) still sitting alone watching the game. I tried slowly to build up the nerve to ask her to be my partner before my turn, and we proceeded to put holes in everything but the Dart Board, I mean how can you miss a dart board from that close? Long story short We were inseparable the rest of my stay there, This was Aug, We ran up an outrage phone bill between visits and I decided to give her the option before my upcoming deployment and Said we could get married before I left or wait until I get back, The last week of Nov she called and said she had the church reserved and all the planning done, Invitations sent etc. So We had a New year's Eve wedding and 14 years, three kids and several deployments later here we are, All from a simple game of darts! Morale of the story never ask a woman something you are not prepared to hear the answer for!

A friend of mine told me to get ready for the evening, we'd be going to a sorority party.
Turns out the average age was in the upper 70s, with about 7 girls in the 20-30 range. I did notice this one fine lady, but I was too chicken to butt in on a clique and make a fool of myself, so we just decided to get drunk. Alcohol was cheap and we had fun. Then we went to another club since the "party" was unbearable. By then I was seriously liquored up and had to stop dancing to rap music and sit down. Turns out this fine lady I saw at the "party" decided to change locations with her girlfriends, and down right next to me. I waved a half-concious "hello" and probably muttered something similar. I was feeling pretty sick and decided to remedy this by praying to the porcelain god. Inserted a pack of chewing gum in my mouth and went back and actually started haveing a conversation with this fine lady. We shared a cab home together. But since I, being all gentleman like, had to get out earlier, nothing serious happened on the first night. Of course we exchanged phone numbers. So, next day, I decided to call, but got a "the number you have dialed has been disconnected or is no longer in service" message. DOH. Must have been the booze and I probably jumbled some digits. So I basically tried a few dozen combinations before I gave up and admitted to the misery, that I would never ever see this fine lady again. But she wasn't one of those types that patiently waits for the guy to call, so she sent me a text message asking me out on a date, basically. That was in January 1999. We got married in summer last year and our baby is due in september. |
