I'm tend to replace my iPads every couple of years, once the AppleCare runs out but they then go to hubby for a further few years. Ereaders though, I'm a sucker for an upgrade!

Some of the people that I have spoken to on these forums have had some interesting things to say about their ipads, and I tend to take notice when people talk ill of their chose ebook readers because it is human nature to claim that their book reader is the best one, sometimes becuase I chose it. Some ipad users and ipad mini users tell me that "books really a side line business for apple thus they do not tend to get the best deals on some books and we often pay more for books than others do becuase apple does this as a sideline business." That's apple users talking there not my words.

Yeah I still only buy books from Amazon, I have a HDX and a Mini and like to have the choice. I think there are times when only e-ink will do.

My iPad mini has basically replaced my PW2
Quote:
I've never bought an ebook from Apple, lol ... my wife did one time, and I was pissed (in a figurative sense, of course). That same book I had it already via Kindle. It was just a matter of download Kindle app for her and read. One of the things that I like from Kindle for iOs is that the application allows me to read landscape mode without splitting the screen. I read computer books, so diving the screen like that makes the code hard to read. Apple's default reader doesn't allow me that. I will also confess that I'm getting tired of "disinfecting " books. I started to think about this and the time and effort I was putting on that. By two years, my computer books will be obsolete, unless is a classic book. So even if I loss access or can't use it anymore, won't be a big deal. Now, that's not the same for fiction books, but I just have a few of them. Last edited by jocampo; 05-29-2014 at 10:51 AM. |

I have 3 different kinds of eReaders but find most of my reading is on my Paperwhite 2013. Its just closest to my old print book experience of years ago.

I thought from your other thread "Has the Samsung Galaxy S5 made all the Kindles obsolete?" you didn't use your PW much now.

This is one of the reasons why I like reading on my iPad Mini because I have all of my books from my various sources easily and conveniently available to read without worrying about file format and DRM restrictions. And, I can pick up my Kindle or Nook eink readers or my phone and keep on reading where I left off since everything syncs up in the cloud with each other.

Another reason I still use my PW2 quite a bit is because it is inherently less distracting.
The iPad provides a much better experience via the Kindle reader that I prefer but the trouble is all the other stuff on the iPad keeps tempting me. Those notifications from Facebook will keep coming in and I will keep getting distracted. Kindle devices are single-purpose and are often to be preferred when distractions are not acceptable. |

A question to people who prefer to use LCD screens: Do you use a computer intensively for work?
Personally I work with computers and I couldnt then read on an LCD screen to relax. |

I use a computer all day at work, and am equally happy reading books on my iPad Mini or my PW2.

s5 is the only reader away from my house.
Quote:
In fact the s5 keeps my AcroBible tags in alphabetical order while the same AcroBible tags are in random order on my Fire HDX. I believe the s5 is the largest defacto tablet one can carry in a shirt pocket. I doubt an iPad can fit in a shirt pocket and the iPhones simply have too small a screen. However, for ladies with pocketbooks, the best bet would probably be an iPad Mini or the Fire HDX as long as they don't read in bright sunlight. I purchased the s5 as a phone but now mostly use it as my tablet of choice. I let my wife use the Kindle Fire HDX to access QVC and do her reading there. However, most of my reading is by my bay window in the living room with bright sunlight streaming in. That kind of sunlight makes the s5 and HDX USELESS. Thus, the Paperwhite 2013 gets most of my reading there. I also doubt if iPads or iPhones can be used in bright, direct sunlight although others may disagree. I use the Kindle Fire HDX to read when its a dark cloudy or rainy day by my bay window. The white text on black background is perfect in those conditions. What is really needed is a 5" screen size tablet with the ability to switch between eInk and LCD screens. If it is also a phone, all the better. Last edited by sirmaru; 05-29-2014 at 05:19 PM. |

I read on my Retina Mini also, probably about 45 % of the time. I use it for school reading and if I want to read when I'm out and about. I do still like my PW2 though and will buy the PW3 when it comes out. They're cheap enough and I like eink for outside and for the long battery life.

I have an iPad Air and use it for reading PDFs, while I use my Kobo Aura HD for reading fiction. I was tempted to purchase an iPad mini retina instead of the iPad Air so that I could carry both my academic reading and fiction around on one device when I was out of the house (and read on the Kobo at home), but I decided that the bigger screen would be appreciated when reading PDFs of journal articles and the like. Reading these posts I wonder if I made a mistake. I think I will try reading some fiction on the iPad Air tomorrow to see how I like it. Perhaps in two years or so I'll pick up a mini, I do love the size.
