Actually, I find this most interesting. Somebody is taking advantage of the fact that the Lester Dents are PD in Canada, and creating a commercial PD version for sale on Amazon Canada. The implication is that all 159 Canadian PD stories could be available for sale, in Canada (and for Canadians) legally.

Most interesting...

(Also note - these have only been out there since April...)

The world, surprising as it may seem to many North Americans , is much bigger than just USA and Canada. These books are available in other Amazon stores too. You know, those ones out on the edges of the world where dragons and sea-monsters lurk .

Now, now, most of those dragons and sea-monsters live in life + 70 countries where these Doc Savages are not PD. That does not mean that sometimes something legal in one country is not released in another country where it is not legal, with embarrasing results. That happened with 1984 a while back...(It was PD in Canada, but not in the US, and the same people released it in both countries. It's what led to the famous "take the ebook off of the Kindle" contraversy...)

Could you name an example?

One example, from a land of dragons and sea-monsters, is the home of platypussies, jumpyroosters and crocodilians.

I remember that controvercy. It spawned quite a long thread here at MR at the time if I recall correctly and gave Amazon quite a black eye with its customers to boot. Not only for the fact that they took down copies that had been bought in good faith but that the buyers weren't compensated at the time for the loss of said ebook either. I don't recall if they ever did do so later or not.

They only have the recent Will Muuray completions, not the classic Doc Savages. (The Laurence Donovan Doc's are in PD in Australia, see, Project Gutenberg Australia site. Austrailia shifted from Life + 50 to Life + 70 in 2006, so anything that went PD in 1954 is still PD, but nothing else will go PD until 2026).

But Australia's copyright is irrelevant to purchasers, such as myself, who do not live in Australia. Also, amazon.co.au serves not just to Australia.

From just a quick look I can see most of the Doc Savages from 1933, that being the first year of issue. These trickled out last month and one assumes more will be appearing.

If you cannot see them then their visibility must be geo-restricted from you. If geo-restriction is in effect then it will be that I can see them because I am in a +50 country and is one that is served by amazon.co.au (although not exclusively so).

My experience with Amazon's geo-restrictions for ebooks is that it will show you the listing, but will show no price with a message that it's not available in your area. Maybe they do something different on the .au site, but I doubt it. Maybe try direct-linking a couple for us to see?

I looked under Doc Savage, Kenneth Robeson, and Lester Dent. None of the 1933's showed up for me...<shrug> They do show up in the Canadian Amazon...

If I just browse to amazon.com.au the 1933 ones I mentioned before show up in a Doc Savage search with Kenneth Robeson as author and with prices (the cover art on these early ones is not the original). But if I click on one to go to the book's own page then it reverts to price unavailable.

However, if I log in to amazon they then come up priced (NZD1.05) and available for purchase. As I said before, I and my amazon account details are in a +50 country.

If I log into Amazon.com on my US account, I can't see them. If I log in with my Canadian account, I can.

Shrug...I'm not going to set up a Canadian ID just to look at Australian ebooks on Amazon.

The bigger picture is that the 1933 Doc Savages are still under copyright in Austrailia. I suspect that somebody thinks that Austrailia is still Life + 50. It isn't. It's now Life + 70. Do not be surprised if a cease and desist order comes down from Conde Nast to Amazon Austrlia and the books are removed.

If Conde Nast was going to release e-books versions, I would expect they would also release them in the US (which would be their biggest market).

I already had one from when I lived there, left it active because I still have Canadian income.

You have the same copyright as USA now (Life+70 if I recall correctly, not +50 as in NZ, for example, which the Australian store also serves). So perhaps not a surprise that you cannot see them just as USA residents also seem to be experiencing.

Your copyright was Life+50 but was changed to match that of the USA as part of the Aus-USA trade agreement finalised a few years back.
