Yeah, you really can't eyeball the difference between the two in code view. Not with the fonts I use anyway!

What about the "section" sign?

I don't know what you mean by "stopped the Compare algorithm." I've seen no adverse behavior with regard to the section sign when comparing the results of "smarten."

Note: there is a setting for "lines of context around each change" in the Compare Options if you're worried about not seeing the last two lines (that contain the section signs). I think the setting defaults to 3. Increase that setting and you should see them.

It should be noted that the SmartyPants algorithm is customizable (the EM|EN dash behavior can be easily reversed, ellipses ignored, etc.). The calibre version has also had modifications/improvements made to it. calibre's implementation also does not result in html entities.

I say this because it's important to note that while calibre uses the SmartyPants script, there's a little more to "Smarten Punctuation" than SmartyPants.
