The Magic Kingdom of Landover Volume 1: Magic Kingdom For Sale SOLD! - The Black Unicorn - Wizard at Large by Terry Brooks

AmazonUS

I've never read any Brooks, is this worth a read?
I read Magic Kingdom for Sale SOLD! years ago so my memory is a bit foggy. It's definitely lighter fare than his Shannara series and I would suggest not starting with this series.

Here is how I would read Brooks.

Start with Elf Stones of Shannara. Sword of Shannara is not necessary to read - I enjoyed it when I was 12 but in hindsight its a total Tolkien ripoff. I feel like Elfstones of Shannara definitely stands on its own. It's a fantastic fantasy novel - easily on my top 10. The Wishsong of Shannara is great too. It might be worth buying the trillogy that includes Sword of Shannara.

Then continue onto his best work, Heritage of Shannara series, and read them in order. The omnibus on Amazon is absolutely worth the asking price:

http://www.amazon.com/Heritage-Shann...ge+of+shannara

Really great fantasy series. Interesting characters, dark themes, and highly suspenseful plots that keep you guessing. I can't recommend this series enough.

An alternate POV, from someone who generally dislikes straight-up fantasy...

Skip Shannara altogether and head directly to Landover.

Seriously, I like the clash of cultural assumptions inherent in the "modern person gets thrust into magical world" subgenre of fantasy, and the Landover books do that well. Putting my money where my mouth is, this makes the third time I've bought books 1-3; I bought the mass-markets as they came out, lost track of them a move or two ago, bought the physical omnibus, and just now bought the digital omnibus with the Amazon deal.

Note that this is a collection of the first three books; there are three more.

To be fair, I only read the first book in the mid 90's so you should definitely listen to the others But I do recommend the Shannara series, especially the Heritage of Shannara omnibus. Maybe I'll give the Landover series another chance...

Free Today on Amazon UK (previously free on Amazon US, quoted on an earlier thread) - Dark Legacy: The End of the Kai (The Legacy Cycle) by Domenico Italo Composto-Hart

'The End of the Kai of the Dark Legacy Cycle details the violent end of the Kai Order-an ancient, spiritual guild of warrior guardians and priestesses who have sworn their lives to protect the Oracle Queen of Atlantis-at the hands of Maniok, the being referred to as the "Great Evil" in the age-old Song of the Oracle King.

It is a chronicle of Arkan, the last Kai guardian, and his desperate attempt to save the life of his priestess who carries his unborn son, and his escape from Atlantis.

Book I - Trinity is the story of Kieko, a lonely Lemurian boy of mixed blood who seeks to know more about his absent father's mysterious Atlantean past. Constantly bullied by Aiko, he eventually takes refuge with the village priest in the Kadek Temple where he studies medicinal and culinary arts, calligraphy, and ultimately, the art of Ki sword. Under the tutelage of the priest he comes to know the grim truth about his father, and is prepared to face the horrific assault of the armies of the Atlantean Empire upon his humble world.

And this is just the beginning . . . '

I've just noticed that Analog SFF and Asimov's SF magazines are now available at Kobo, and an annual subscription is slightly cheaper (£22.09 as a lump sum) than through Amazon (£23.88 as £1.99 monthly), although less flexible.

Unfortunately, neither the subscription nor the individual issues seem to be couponable.

[EDIT: Oh dear, through Kobo the magazine issues seem to only be available on Kobo apps on iOS, Android and Tablets, not on Kobo Desktop nor onKobo eInk devices.]

So I'm still looking for a bargain subscription. B&N have done a combined Analog & Asimov's subscription occasionally, but only in the US.

Arcadata linked to this in her thread but I thought I'd give it notice here too.

The Amtrak Wars: Cloud Warrior ($1.99)

The Amtrak Wars: Cloud Warrior by Patrick Tilley is reduced to $1.99 the date of this post.
B&N Amazon

Quote:
Hundreds of years after civilisation has been destroyed by nuclear war, the Earth is divided between the Trackers of the Amtrak Federation a community living in vast subterranean cities and the Mutes, who have evolved to withstand the radiation that has driven their foes underground. A long war for possession of the overground has killed and enslaved many of the Mutes, leaving only the Plainfolk to resist the Federation.

The Mutes' physical strength and tribal way of life is no match for the advanced weaponry that is used against them. Mr Snow, supernaturally gifted wordsmith of the Mute clan M'Call, is the Plainfolk's last hope in withstanding the onslaught of the 'sand-burrower's' attacks.

Seventeen-year-old rookie wingman Steve Brickman is just about to graduate from Flight Academy. Safe in the knowledge of his own brilliance, his future seems assured. As a member of the Tracker society, Brickman has grown up deep underground, protected from the radiation of the blue-sky world above. The lure of this open space fills him with both fear and excitement, as he anticipates piloting his first mission against the sub-human Mutes.

But all does not go as smoothly as planned, as the clan M'Call kidnaps Steve and puts him under the strange tutelage of the mysterious Mr Snow. Captivated by the beautiful Clearwater and befriended by the stoic Cadillac, Brickman soon discovers that there is more to the Mutes than his masters would have him believe. Eyes now open to the Mute's humanity, Brickman is torn by a painful divided loyalty. And now, it seems, he has become embroiled in an ancient Mute prophecy; that of the Talisman, the one who will save them all.

Cloud Warrior, first published in 1983, is the first instalment of Patrick Tilley's internationally best selling science fiction epic, The Amtrak Wars Saga.

Deep Space: Star Carrier: Book Four by Ian Douglas is $.99 the date of this post.

Quote:

The fourth book in the epic saga of humankind's war of transcendence

Humanity had appeared to fend off the Sh'daar assault once and for all, though they never learned why the alien empire was driven to halt Earth's advancement toward technological Singularity.

But in this war of worlds, victory is always elusive. And now a new battle begins.

After twenty years of peace, not one but two fragile truces are unraveling. Alexander Koenig, the former Navy commander whose heroics forced the Sh'daar into submission, has won a second term as President of the United States of North America. But pursuing his mandate—sovereignty from the centuries-old Earth Confederation—becomes a risky proposition due to events taking place on the other side of the galaxy.A Confederation research vessel has been ambushed.Destroyers are descending on a human colony. It seems the Sh'daar have betrayed their treaty, and all nations must stand united—or face certain death.

The Hallowed Hunt
by Lois McMaster Bujold

is $3.99 at B&N

http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/hall...cmaster+bujold

Below is the blurb:
A magnificent epic tale of devotion, possession, obsession, and strange destiny from the author of the Hugo Award-winning, Paladin of Souls, Lois McMaster Bujold

The half-mad Prince Boleso has been slain by a noblewoman he had intended to defile -- and Lord Ingrey kin Wilfcliff must transport the body to its burial place and the accused killer, the Lady Ijada, to judgment. With the death of the old Hallow King imminent and the crown in play, the road they must travel together is a dangerous one. And though he is duty-bound to deliver his prisoner to an almost certain death, Ijada may be the only one Ingrey dares trust. For a monstrous malevolence holds the haunted lord in its sway -- and a great and terrible destiny has been bestowed upon him by the gods, the damned, and the dead.

The woderful novella The Wandering Earth by Liu Cixin (not to be confused with the short story collection of the same title) is a free download again at Amazon:

I cannot recommend this novella (and everything by Liu Cixin, in fact) highly enough. This is my review of The Wandering Earth, in case you're curious: http://sentidodelamaravilla.blogspot...liu-cixin.html
