As long as it can last about 24 hours I think I'm okay with that because I can just charge over night.

Is it easier to look up definitions of words on the paperwhite?

How fast is the 3G on paperwhite? Can you check your email ok? What about Google Map.
It's rated for ~28 hours of reading time with WiFi off and light on halfway.

Unless you are actually reading it 24 hrs a day...

While it's in standby mode, the light is fully off.

No, the Paperwhite has NO audio (sound) capability at all. Its only claim to fame is a self-lit screen which degrades the text.

It degrades the text? So it would be better to get a kindle touch or DX which does not have the text degrading and instead by some sort of lighting gear to read in the dark? What kind of lighting gear do you recommend?

Thank you. How good is the 3G. Is the 3G faster on the paperwhite compared to the 3G in previous versions of Kindle?

I don't find the lit screen to degrade the text at all. I suspect this is very subjective, but my PW2 has the best resolution of any ereader I've owned.

It does have some of the best resolution, but the extra stuff on top of the screen itself is noticeable, at least for me.

I think you will find that 3G (not wifi) speeds will all be the same for all 3G kindles. The speed is limited to 3G itself (not real fast anyway) and it's reception strength in your area.

I can't speak for the Paperwhite (not yet, I'm thinking of buying one) but I did pick up a cheap Nook Simple Touch with Glowlight at a pawnshop (as a backup), and there's definitely some loss of quality in the text when comparing it with my NST (when the light is out). It's something I can live with at night (because the light is nice), but I'll probably be using the NST for most of my Nook day time reading. I honestly didn't expect the difference. But, to be honest, I probably wouldn't have noticed much if I didn't have the NST to compare it to.

The light on the Paperwhite is a plastic layer that is placed on top of the eInk screen. I don't know about others, but I've never seen any plastic layer that was as clear as glass. This plastic layer degrades the text because you have to view the text through a much less than perfect layer of plastic. To see the difference, go to a retailer and compare a Paperwhite next to the non-touchscreen Kindle. Even though the resolution is lower on the non-touch Kindle, its screen is crisper and sharper, whereas the Paperwhite screen looks a bit fuzzy due to the extra plastic layer.

You have to weigh up the loss of contrast caused by the light diffuser against the gain in contrast from the resulting illumination.

In good natural light, you're absolutely right, the light diffuser causes a very slight "fuzziness" compared to a non-illuminated reader. Personally, however, I do most of my reading in the evenings, in artificial light, and in those conditions there's a massive "win" from having the frontlight.

I find the PW 2013 clearer than the PW 2012 but both are far clearer than printed pages IMHO.

I have no complaints about my PW2 either. I find it to be a terrific ereader.
