My PW1 behaves as expected (ie. how everyone described it, and how it has been since pretty much forever: deep sleeping).

Then again, I almost never have wireless on.

Since kindle PW1 also has readyToSuspend, I suppose it goes to standby mode instead of full sleep.
Apparently this is not the case for kindle PW2
I very much doubt it. Much rather some other piece of software is deferring the suspend. If you keep looging everything, maybe this becomes more obvious.

Code:
#!/bin/sh

while [ 1 -eq 1 ]; do
    echo "waiting for event ...
    lipc-wait-event com.lab126.powerd * >> /tmp/powerd.log
    echo at `date`. >> /tmp/powerd.log
done
Keep this running in the background (I did not test this script, so maybe try it manually once), disconnect the USB cable, power-off the PW1 and wait 5 minutes. Then connect again and check the log file.

Maybe its software as you say peterson.
Since I rooted my amazon I didn't install any software aside the recommended recovery app and usbnet

could it be that usbnet prevent kindle from sleeping while working in wireless mode? could it be that amazon wanted to (ab)use the super slow wireless to update itself?

Whatever the reason is my script solved it for me, and I no longer have to wake up at night to check if I turned my wireless off or not.

If in the future you got that annoying problem I am having, you know what to do
