Not that I'm really considering getting a Sony eReader at this time, but TigerDirect is selling manufacturer refurbished T2s for $69. But the Sony eReader Store is no longer in operation. Will new Sony eReaders work on Kobo's store, or just ones transferred over that already had a Sony account? And, since it appears that you are required to have a Sony eReader Store account to sign up for Overdrive (they ask you to enter in a Sony provided account code as part of the sign-up process) is that code still somehow available on a newly purchased Sony eReader? What attracts me to the T2 (besides the build and (current) good price) is the fact that I wouldn't have to use ADE for ePubs. (I use Linux so I can't use ADE -- I've run into that issue with my Nook.) My local library seems to have more Kindle books than ePub, but it might be nice to be able to handle both without a computer in the middle.

Why do you need to sign up for OverDrive? Shouldn't it just use your library card?

Also, have you tried running ADE in WINE?

Assuming because you have access to BC libraries you can possibly buy in BC or have someone buy for you, a T3 is $79 new, not refurbished, and much nicer IMO than the T1 or T2.

You can create an Adobe account right on the reader (T1,T2,T3). I just did it to see. Easier to do it on the computer and you could do it on a friends or library computer I am sure.

If all you need is a library card, that would be great. As for running ADE in Wine, it was a no go when I tried it a few months ago.

They've lowered the price of the T2s to $50 now. I'm thinking of at least trying one out.

I live in Texas, so you might be confusing me with the original poster? A $79 T3 would be nice, but they sell for about $150 on eBay in the states. I don't think they were ever officially sold in the U.S. Meanwhile the T2 is now at $50 with a year Sony warranty. I'm curious how well Evernote works with them. If I can just get my notes on the T2, that would be nicer than reading them on Android phone -- at least in the light.

I don't think setting up the ADE account was a problem -- I believe I still have one. It was running ADE on my Linux computer that was a no go. So, if the T2 has all the software needed for the "unlock" or whatever it is called, that would be great -- it would allow me to choose some books that I couldn't use in the past.

It looks as though, unlike the Kindle, the T2 has a decent web browser (as decent as one could be using E-Ink at any rate).

BTW, thanks for the response.

No you don't. Only if the book needs to be transferable, and thus associated with an AdobeID. Library books do not need continuity like that, so you can leave it tied to the Sony device.

Of course, the device also allows you to sign into/create an AdobeID, from what I've heard.

In any event, rcentros originally asked why you need a Sony account to "sign up for OverDrive", which makes no sense to me, else how could I checkout Kindle books?
Sony account can serve as an AdobeID, and the OverDrive app asks you to sign in with an AdobeID, maybe this is what was meant?

I guess this was what I was trying to figure out. I don't have an Adobe ID, and don't want one. I would, however, like to be able to read epubs from my library. Will the Sony allow me to do this?

I don't have a Sony, but I don't see why not. If the onboard verification doesn't allow you to checkout books by verifying without an ID, you can always use ADE. When you "Authorize this Computer" you can fill in your AdobeID, or check the box on the bottom saying something along the lines of "authorize this computer without an ID".

You end up with a screen that looks like this (if you go back to the authorization screen): see screenshot.

EDIT: It looks like you cannot transfer from ADE to a reader without verifying by ID. But I'd assume Sony has the same option, to only allow it for the device itself?

Maybe nothing ... I hope. I read somewhere that you had to sign up for the Sony account and needed some account number. I'm guessing I'm confused. Which, in this case, would be great.

I'll have to try that. Thanks. Does Adobe still allow you to download 1.7.2? (I'll look it up.)

I think this must be what I read. So, if I get a Sony T2, I should be able to download books directly to it from my library, and the Adobe software built into the T2 should be able to "unlock" it by itself? That would be perfect. Even simpler and more direct than downloading Kindle books from my library (which is pretty simple).

Thanks.

I should think so. But I don't actually have a Sony to confirm, so I cannot say from experience how you authenticate your Sony.

EDIT: After checking the help guide on OverDrive: http://help.overdrive.com/customer/p...-t1-or-prs-t2-

It sounds like you will have to authorize your device with an ID, either through your Sony Account:

Quote:
  1. From your home screen, tap Reader Store.
  2. If this button isn't there, the Reader Store may not be available in your country. Continue to the next method.
  3. Tap Create Account.
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts to create your account. This creates and registers an Adobe ID for you with the same credentials.
Or through the Sony Reader software if the Store isn't available in your country. Why, really?? In any event, it sounds as though all The Reader software does is the same as ADE does -- register your Sony with an ID.

An ID is apparently required.

Afterwards, it sounds as though you can download directly as normal; just go to the library, checkout a book, and Download: Adobe EPUB eBook. You will download the ACSM license, and your Sony Device will use the AdobeID installed by either Sony Reader or ADE to verify and download the book.
