I just saw a NY Times article about a "famous" hoarder (his parents were celebrities).

One of the comments is from a former hoarder who has shifted his/her focus to "hoarding" ebooks. One of our own, perhaps?

I was once that way about mp3 songs. Back in the Napster heyday.

Yes, I have clutter. All of my novels are gone and I am currently eliminating half the craft and cookbooks until all of them can fit on a single bookshelf. My bookshelves are being temporarily repurposed to hold craft stuff. All of my ebooks, audiobooks and music have to fit on one drive, since it will be backed up to another drive (which will be stored offsite).

BTW, my cousin found out (fire last Wed.) that while insurance does cover your computer, it does not cover lost data such as music, ebooks or audiobooks. Some policies do extend to some data, but this requires a seperate computer rider policy. This is where cloud or offsite backup storage is your friend.

Guess it depends on the country and insurance policy. My contents insurance does cover up to £5000 worth of digital purchases (which isn't actually that much when you think about it). But I do have multiple backups anyway...

When I was 30 I moved from New Jersey to San Francisco. I sold all my belongings except that which could fit in 7 XEROX boxes. After 5 years I just about got everything back in one way or another. Then I was moved to Georgia by my company and went from one bedroom apartment to a 3 bedroom small house. I never purchased a record again but made up for it in CDs. Didn't quite get into VHS but my DVD collection is in the thousands, Blue-ray about 500. I try to give away my computers and electronics to friends and family as soon as I get myself that new version but I still have 5 working computers in my house, 5 ebook readers when all I use is my iPad3 and more than anything I have more cloths than I will ever need. This spring I will scale down in all things. I have been reading about the Tiny House movement and though I'm not leaving my small house (1100sf) I do have to declutter. I hope 2014 is my year.

I have a son who travels by car now.

He moved to the West Coast and reduced his belongings to one large roll along and a medium roll along that fit in his trunk. Has a backpack. He also has a small suitcase that has his "Dress for an important Meeting" suit, etc. It stays with the car unless needed.
He was in 600 to 900 sq ft Hotel rooms and then a 700 foot condo but is now coming back to the East Coast.

He is merciless in his efforts to avoid clutter. Tossed the box desk calendar I gave him for Christmas.

He does have 2 laptops with him and is thinking about adding a 3rd.

I kid him about getting a "Bloomberg Terminal."

I have joked before that if our entire home burned down tomorrow, I would need one shopping trip to replace the clothes and toilteries, and then overnight to let me Dropbox folder redownload onto my computer, and I could pretty much pick up my life where I left off. All my media is on digital now. I can run my books, my workouts, my movies and TV shows, everything solely using a laptop computer.

Actually, we just picked up a Lego hobby, and it's bringing some clutter back into our house. But I like it because it's something we can all do together, and it's nice to have one thing that's not electronic...

Yes, this.

I have both; most of the "clutter" actually belongs to my husband. He did throw out a number of old VCR tapes finally 17 years after we bought a DVD player.

Yeah, he saved up and when they came out he bought the very first model. I think it died a couple of years ago.

One of the most famous hoarders was the butler Bertram from a TV show called Jessie.

As far as the clutter goes I'm bad but not as bad as Bertram, but I am pretty bad, I have gone digital with my books out of necessity, the books were going to take over the basement. Now I have nothing coming in except those in electronic form and library books (that will turn around and leave).

I doubt that you will make it through the series, but there is a Hoarders TV series that you can get.
The food hoarders are really really crazy. The animal ones are next.
