I agree. Next to Norton Antivirus it is the worst of legal malware. And that's just iTunes... along with it are a half-dozen other Apple services that add an extra dollop of special topping to the pile.

In those same 10+ years, I've provided technical support for a few 100 Windows workstations of friends and family, and have yet to see an instance where iTunes (and other Apple services) didn't have an adverse affect on system stability and performance. And so it goes.

Apple has recently asked me if I want to upgrade to the latest iTunes. Is it still causing problems, or has it been fixed?

I see no further problem reports on the "iTunes for Windows" Apple support forum, so it looks as if they've fixed it.

My sister and bro in law updated today and both still had the problem. So it's still out there, but doesn't affect everyone. I have been postponing until I have time to deal with a potentially prolonged process.

As long as you know the solution it's no big deal, Alex. You just have to uninstall then reinstall.

I only use iTunes for iTunes U and podcasts. Since I don't use it with an iDevice, I don't install the file that Apple gives me. It's an archive of multiple install files. I pull out only the actual installers for iTunes and QuickTime. I remove anything iTunes adds to Startup. Then I go into Services and disable anything that says "iPod".
