This may be of interest - Microsoft have extended security updates to XP until July 2015.

Sorry about the tongue-in-cheek caused confusion.
I agree, Thunderbird is only OK (A while back a group made a Plugin to make Thubderbird behave like Eudora: nicknamed:Thundora . IMHO They missed )

Web Mail is not a Client program. It is a generic name for a Browser compatible' On-Line mail interface Run by your ISP.

Both my ISP's have a 'Web Mail'. Neither look like the other, All you Web Viewed mail remains on their servers until:
1) you delete it
2) you use a mail client (like TBird) that is set to Delete the server copy after download.

Caution: Leaving mail ONLY on their server is risking LOSS. Most do not backup or restore mail (or user files) Keep your own backups.

Ok. Thanks. I'm much better prepared for the Linux adventure now.

Xubuntu sounds perfect for you. The main item is what version of QT are you running. You can find that in synaptic. 5 is best, Sigil devs(s) jumped onto the brand spanking new version of QT. I would be very surprised if Xub13.10 does not have QT5.

NOTE: it you use DiapDealers binaries, the QT is already inside and you do not have to even consider what version of QT you are running.

I predict a bit more spritely machine with Xubuntu. Especially if you have over a Gigabyte of memory.

If you do have the dough, a refurbed Windows7 box is nice, tax software, etc, software. I turn on my Win7 at least once a week. It is the only Windows I really like. I would not be surprised however if you come to like the minimal elegance of Xubuntu. If you have a terabyte of hard disk space on a refurbed computer, it would be quite simple to add an Xubuntu section on, and the "newer" hardware would have a much faster chip and more memory.

thanks Mark

I didn't even know about QT versions. I had to Google it, and to tell you the truth (lol) it looks complicated as heck. Fortunately I'm using an XP computer so I can just wade into Linux (by the April XP being dropped deadline). And I know a little bit about Synaptic but have not set that up yet. You guys are WAY ahead of me with this stuff. But I'm learning.

I've heard good things about refurbished machines. And I do like Xubuntu. The computer that was converted is all Xubuntu. I guess you need a bigger computer to have both Xubuntu and MS. Like the computer I'm using now (which is a candidate for conversion to Xubuntu) only has a 37GB HD (16GB available). I just need to learn so much about this stuff. And I'm learning a lot here. I'm going to look for one of those "Dummies" books. 'Linux for Dummies' or whatever cause right now I'm jumping into the middle of the stream, whereas I really need to be just dipping my little toe in at this point. Thanks.

Here's a link to get you started: http://tldp.org/guides.html#intro-linux

It's one of the Linux Documentation Project guides, and it's free so there's no excuse for not trying it out first, eh?

Don't buy something if it doesn't say anything new!
