I'm going to say Kobo and Sony eInk based readers. Once I'm reading, all of the eInk based devices are pretty much equivalent in my mind. Kobo and Sony have the lead over Kindle simply because they support ePub. I have never used a Nook so I cannot comment on it. I like reading on my Android tablet too, but sunlight readability and battery life are big considerations for me so they can never qualify as a favorite in my books.

Voted Sony here, with my Kobo Aura HD and Mini a close second. I love the Sony screens the best, and the Kobo font/margin tweeking capability. The HD screen is a thing of beauty, but I never read with it lit anymore. I use an old m-edge light.
I'm in the minority that doesn't like the front-lit eInk screen. Just not esthetically pleasing to my eyes. When it's lit, it's like reading on a tablet or computer screen, and once I found eink I never could get into reading off my tablets/PDAs again. The light layer on my Glo is visible when it's unlit, and maybe because I worked in commercial glazing my eye goes *right* to the little fibers every time. Distracting as heck. So to me, why sacrifice clarity & a great-looking screen for what amounts to a tablet-reading experience at night? Weirdly, I resisted getting an eink device and stuck with my Axim because I'm a nighttime reader and wanted a backlit screen. If PDAs hadn't died out I might never have picked up my first Nook and discovered eink. |

Six months ago I would have voted Sony but since I acquired my Aura HD and Aura late summer/early fall respectively I'm firmly in the Kobo camp. I love that I can add my own fonts to my Auras, the built-in lighting and their minimalist sleep-covers (Kobo brand on the HD & aftermarket cover off eBay on the Aura). If Sony were to offer e-ink readers with those same features for a competitive price I might be tempted to try them again. I have too many minor quibbles with the Nook e-ink readers that I don't think I'd get another (the one I have was a gift and my first touchscreen reader).

Tablets are fine for indoor reading, but as CarolineNH notes, Quote:

For magazines, graphic novels, and PDFs, tablets have a clear advantage, but for reading ebooks, eInk devices are the way to go. Last edited by WT Sharpe; 12-31-2013 at 12:57 AM. |

The Kindle Paperwhite is an e-ink screen. The poll isn't making any differences between built-in front lights or not, just e-ink.
While lately I've been using the Kobo Glo more because of the light, the Sony is still my favorite ereader because of Kobo's flakey firmware issues. |

I use a (Kobo) tablet for web surfing, YouTubes, email, etc. - as I would use a desktop. I read short articles on it, but for anything longer or requiring concentration, I use Pocket to send the article to my Kobo e-ink (Aura HD). Pocket is the feature I use the most.
E-ink is so good for relaxed, uninterrupted reading. I thought the older Kindles were good, but the Aura HD is a real treat. For me the higher resolution and light make a big difference. |

Agreed. That would be my vote Android Tablet. I read on my Nexus 7 using Moon+ Pro Reader app + Calibre Companion. My Kindles are collecting dust since I got it.

I love my Paperwhite and read mostly on it with the Kobo Mini as a very close runner-up. I also like my Nook HD+, but not to read on exclusively because it is a bit heavier and I find that I always do something else with it instead of just reading.
