Will have to check out some of these. Some of the authors are unknown to me.
Is anyone familiar with the novels of Gérard de Villiers? I read an interesting profile in the New York Times earlier this year. Apparently his novels are a bit "pulpy" but very popular in some parts of the world. But as far as I can tell nothing has been translated into English. |

For those who like Alan Furst, David Downing's series set in WWII Berlin is in a similar vein. The Anglo-American protagonist spies for all four major powers; each book has the name of a Berlin railroad station.

Ok, enough!
This thread has now caused me to buy five books and check out two from my local library: Price, 'The Alamut Ambush', Ambler, 'Dr Frigo', Furst, 'Night Soldiers', MacInnes, 'The Salzburg Connection', Le Carre, 'Call for the Dead, Deighton, 'The Ipcress File'. Thank god I already own most of David Downings series. I would like to respectfully request that the moderator either lock this thread or deny me further access - one or the other. Oh, and what about Graham Greene? |

I don't particularly care for WWII spy novels, I tend to prefer those set in the 21st century. Is Ludlum still writing I don't believe that he is?

Apart from The Spy that Came in from the Cold, I could never understand Lecarre's plots. Non-fiction, but Spycatcher by Peter Wright is a great book.

Lots of good authors mentioned already, but the late Bill Granger is my favorite. His November Man series is high on my list of favorite books.
Unfortunately, none are available in ebook, to my knowledge. I am seriously considering tracking down used hardbacks (second copies; I already have a copy of each) of each of the series so I can send them away to be chopped and scanned. Also, I enjoyed William DeAndrea's Clifford Driscoll series. He, also, is no longer with us. His work is considerably less "dark" than Granger's. Last edited by hrosvit; 12-30-2013 at 10:04 AM. |
