Exactly! I had stopped using them except for one for library books. Now every shelf I ever made and had finally got all deleted is back. Some things Kobo just can't seem to get a handle on.

No duplicated shelves for me, but as I have just bought my Aura 6" two weeks ago, I put books once at the begining on it and never again till now, so my database was "clean". Can't say I can see any difference from the previous firmware, but I'm not reading any kepub at the moment.

One bug solved with 3.1.1 respective to 3.1.0 is Pocket: the wifi updating works again.

EDIT: it worked once. When I tried again after adding more articles, there was no updating...

could someone pls explain why collections are duplicating in 3.1.1 ? i couldnt understand the problem but was it present in 2.8.1 as i dont sync often or as a matter of fact i didnt after the update? i want to update to 3.1.1 but will this bug create a problem as i have about 10 shelves in 2.8.1 ?i think it wont as syncing pocket doesnt sync the device (i read somewhere) but pls clarify?

and is the dictionary back in pdf?and is the problem with pdf navigation in landscape corrected?

and last question: does pocket not update after adding more articles?what is this problem?pls explain?i want to update but they keep on adding bugs(i thought this would be the lucky day)

rkr. we were told this was a hotfix that was only supposed to address the vertical issue introduced in 3.1.0. The fact that it hooked into the duplicate shelf stuff was a huge pain, made infinitely less painful by the Kobo Utilities plugin for calibre.

The "duplicating" shelves is NOT a bug in the firmware. It is a problem on the Kobo server. Kobo made changes on the server where the shelf information is stored. This caused the problem. Kobo are working to fix the server issue, but that probably won't fix the problem on peoples devices.

And to be pedantic, the shelves are not duplicating. They are rising from the dead. Looking at the my database, the extra shelves had creation timestamps ranging back to April. What it appears is that all the shelves that I have deleted since April have come back. It is possible that the server has messed up what has been deleted vs what is current and hence is sending them all back.

This firmware is fixing a specific bug, so don't expect anything else. But, I don't think I have ever seen the dictionary in PDFs and the navigation hasn't changed.

Some people are reporting problems with using WiFi more than once without rebooting. I haven't seen this with either my Glo or my Touch. And a quick test showed Pocket articles are updating as I would expect.

I use the Calibre plugin for Bookshelves to create collections on my Aura, I don't have any other Collections so can anyone tell me if I would I be affected by the duplicate collections bug in 3.1.1?

From what I can see, the problem is that deleted shelves are being revived by the Kobo server. That means if you have deleted shelves, they might come back. As you are letting the driver create and delete shelves, there is a good chance that shelves have deleted and recreated as you move books on and off the device.

So, it probably will affect you.

To avoid this, before the next sync, add "SyncShelves=false" to the "ApplicationPreferences" of the "Kobe eReader.conf" file. This prevents the shelves from syncing to the server.

There are two steps you can take; one will clean up thge existing duplicated shelves, the other will ensure that shelves are never again synced to Kobo.

1. calibre has available for it a plugin called Kobo Utilities.
   
   With this plugin installed, and your Kobo attached, launch the plugin. (This will be dependent on where YOU selected to have the icon for the plugin added when you installed it).
   
   From the plugins menu, select Database and then Fix Duplicate Shelves. The plugin will then display a list of shelves and how many occurences of each shelf are found. Select which shelves to delete, and then indicate whether to keep the oldest or newest shelf of each duplicated one. (I *think* that normally, you would want to keep the newest instance).
   
   Next, decide whether or not to Purge the shelves from the database. If you decide to Purge, then the records are totally dropped from the Kobo; however, they will remain on the Kobo Server, and, unless the second bullet is done, will reappear. If you decide NOT to purge, then the next sync of your device to Kobo will also remove the duplicate records from their infrastructure.
   
   Finally, press the OK button and watch the magic happen.
2. The option also exists to ensure that neither shelves nor their conrents (only Kobo format books) EVER sync to the Kobo servers.
   
   To do this, with your Kobo attached to your computer, browse through the directories on it and find the .kobo\Kobo directory. (Note that under Linux and OS/X environments, the .kobo directory will be hidden due to the leading period). Within this directory will be a couple of files; the one you are concerned with is the Kobo eReader.conf file. This file contains various options that are used to control the device.
   
   Open this file in a text editor (on Windows for instance, use Notepad, NOT Word or Write), and look for a line [ApplicationPreferences]. After this line, add a new line SyncShelves=false. Save the file, and disconnect the Kobo as usual.
   
   The addition of this line will ensure that shelves do NOT get synced to the Kobo Cloud.

Thank for the explanantion Peter but I don't really understand what you have said.

The KOBO Utilities Plug In, I have installed it but I don't really understand it and can't bring up the database at all. It keeps wanting me to customise it, which I don't want to do as a) I don't understand it and b) generally I don't want to use it.

I found the kobo ereader config file but mine displays in notebook as one giant paragraph so no idea where or how to add in the line SyncShelves=false or what i need between the other commands, i.e dots, dashes etc
