I don't buy e-books from Apple and I don't have a Kindle so if your question is specific, I cannot help you. Now if your question is general as to how any e-book looks like on the Ipad, I could tell you that on top of the color there is the fluidity, the very high definition of the Retina display, the customization of font, background, margins, page turn etc which in my opinion is very superior to e-readers and the choice of what app you use to read your e-books. In my case it's Marvin.
The only real downside is the battery life which is very poor compared to that of a dedicated e-reader, and the price too could be an issue as the Ipad is much more expensive than a dedicated e-reader.

Paperwhite 2 didn't really interest me - the only thing I'd want that the PW2 has and my PW1 doesn't is the pop-up footnotes feature - but if this thing materialises as described, I might be considerably more tempted, in spite of being very happy with my PW1...

I'm pretty sure this is real and that Amazon will release a 3rd gen Paperwhite a couple of months earlier than their usual Oct/Sept release dates. The PW2 in my opinion doesn't feel like much of an upgrade at all; same design, a few new features, but not worth getting if you already own the PW1.

But the article does talk about buttons....

The edges of the device will also now be ‘buttons’ of a sort. According to what we’ve heard, instead of old-fashioned ’split’ buttons found on previous Kindles, these will be ’squeezable’ buttons that give off haptic feedback when activated. Theoretically, this should allow you to change pages without having to awkwardly reach over with your thumb to tap the ‘next page’ zone on the Paperwhite’s screen. That plus the ambient light sensor to automatically adjust the screen light to the light in the room makes this possiblity really interesting to me.

I'm not interested in the ambient light sensor (I have turned similar things off on every device that have it because they don't fit my preferences), but buttons alone would be enough to tempt me to upgrade from PW1.

That, plus the pop-up footnotes, and I'm sold.

Yes I prefer physical buttons -- primarily when walking and reading outdoors in winter.

Or when reading indoors in winter (or spring or autumn), sometimes.

Touchscreens (especially capacitive touch) and always-freezing hands just really don't go together very well at all. (The only reason why I finally gave in and got myself a smartphone is that I don't make phonecalls, and I don't really get phonecalls, and if I do get two per winter, I'll survive the two seconds it takes to take off the mittens + gloves to answer it.)
