Argh!!! So I was happy updating firmware by sideloading and everything was working OK for two months until i connected Aura HD to my home Wi-Fi in order to install a dictionary. After that - the original problem returned - now when I connect my Kobo AURA HD to my computer via USB I get the same message again - "You need to format disk". Needless to say Calibre doesn't see the device anymore, etc. This is ridiculous! I've been developing software for living for the last 25 years and I would die from shame if my products behaved like that...

Not to be picky but many MANY people don't have issues like this.

You might try doing a factory reset then installing 3.1.1 skipping all the 3.x.x, if you can. I have a hunch there is a bit of earlier code that is not playing well with 3.1.1. This is just my own suspicion, a hunch, so no guarantees.

Luck;

This happened to me with 3.0 and Davidfor said to apply the update again using all of the files. Seemed to work.

I got the same message with Aura and Aura HD when I startup, but everything keeps functioning well.

So the non-fucntioning part doesn't have to be related to the message. It doesn't understand some partitiontables it seems.
My experience is that Kobo is apt to generate disk errors. Normally those can be fixed. I usually first put it in a normal cardreader and check the card with dskchk.

One of the 3.x updates started this nonsense with the external card on my AuraHD. After trying multiple FAT32 formats of it and different cards. I solved the problem. I no longer use an external card.

*BUMP*

I have the exact same problem with a new(!) Kobo Aura. Are there any updates on this issue? Or do I have to go for a refund?

I have the same problem. Just bought my Kobo Aura HD i when i plug it into my Windows 7 PC it says ~'Kobo Aura USB device installed successfully' then i get 'You need to format disk'. I cant see the device in file explorer and the Kobo software or Adobe digital editions does not find the device. I have tried it on another windows 7 computer and get the same results...

With a new device, do a factory reset. If it doesn't come good after that, take it back. It probably means the internal memory is bad.

Damn, that sucks. I was brought here by a search, and have the exact same issue. I found this forum the other day when I searched for Kobo Aura 'bright pixel'. I wonder how many I will have to go through in order to get a working device?

Just as an aside I have NOT heard from Kobo support yet! I guess they deserve their rep!

And to add a comment here, I got this with a straight out of the box H20. It went back and the replacement has a faulty screen, it has a bright stripe running up from one of the LED's. The format disc one was number 2 as my first one had a yellow screen with a darker patch along the top.

Needless to say I am gutted and won't risk a 4th try.

And they wonder why Amazon are leading the market.
