Kindles and Nooks are both equally nice. It's easier to get library books in the US on a Kindle, and Amazon has better customer service, but the devices are more the same than different. If you like the Nook app better, you might like the Nook interface better, but you'd have to check them both out in a store to see.

I've got a Nook Simple Touch and a Kindle (no touch). I like them both. I bought the Nook Simple Touch two years ago for $69 on sale (this year they've been on sale for $39) and the Kindle was nearly new at a pawnshop for $45 (and they've been on sale, new, for $49 this year). So, for about $120 I've got both. Sometimes I buy from Amazon, sometimes from Barnes & Noble. I try to keep collections together. Usually, if the price is close to the same, I'll buy Nook version just because I figure B&N needs the business more. And I do, sometimes, take advantage of Nook Free Fridays. I think I like the Nook's interface slightly better, but when it comes down to reading, it really doesn't matter to me. Both have good dark fonts. Sites like manybooks.net usually have both Kindle and Nook formats available, so that's not even a consideration. Where I live, the library almost always has Kindle and Nook ebooks so, since Kindle is easier to use (especially since I use Linux), I usually borrow books on the Kindle. I don't see any reason why you have to chose one or the other, both seem pretty good to me.
