Nice write-up of the crimes!
I say, do try to get a leather case along with a sleeve, that way, when she puts it down on the bed, nightstand, car seat, and it slips, it has a bit of protection... Most people will nit put the kindle inside a sleeve if they just take a short break from reading, but the case is always around it.... |

I frequently throw my Kindle (as gently as you can throw something!) onto the bed, and it's been accidentally knocked onto a carpeted floor once or twice. It's still going fine and it's not even in a case....
I really do think most times the damage is caused when people carry their Kindle's in a bag and other things in it can put pressure on the screen, or if it's in a pocket and it gets flexed with your movement. Then when it's lightly thrown down on something or knocked to the floor, there is a weakness already there and the slight bang then causes the damage to appear. Good luck to her with her latest Kindle! |

I have a speck case for my kindle keyboard, in particular this one http://www.speckproducts.com/tablets...-keyboard.html. It's a very hard case. They make one for the kindle touch but it's different and I dont' know how sturdy it is. Basically look for a case that it locks into and that the cover is really thick and hard and folds back on itself. It makes it heavier but it's more protected. BTW I didn't spend that much money on the case. Target had it on clearance for about $12.

The crime blotter writeup was both hilarious and sad...those poor Kindles! Another suggestion: get a hard case.
I have and can recommend this one: http://amzn.com/B0064JEXUY I used it without a case for my Kindle Touch for two years. It's worn well, no issues, is lightweight, and is surprisingly solid. Not much flex to the front, so unlike most sleeves, it really will add protection from things knocking about in her purse. A pocket alone can't really do much other than protect from scratches. This case is also big enough to handle the PW2 in a case similar to Amazon's, as that's how I have mine setup for travel. Those cases are pretty minimal in terms of both drop protection and impact resistance. But they're better than nothing. Unfortunately, protecting against drops is a trade off between weight and protection. The more solid cases generally do a better job, at a cost of making the device heavy and less comfortable to use. I personally opt for light cases for daily use, heavier duty ones for throwing in a carryon for flights (where I know I'm going to be somewhat careless about what else it might come into contact with in my bag), and ultimately, Square Trade's 2 and 3 year warranties. They do cover mishaps of all kinds! ![]() |

The next story will be that the Kindle Paperwhite has ghosting, caused by all the predecessors...
This might be a weird suggestion, but... wouldn't it be possible to put the Kindle into the official Amazon sleeve for normal usage, and then put it into a padded lunch box while traveling? A lunch box, foam padding and some glue can be had for about €10 or less. I carry bananas in unpadded lunch boxes, and they actually survive till lunch.
