Repeated searches fix large eBooks.

No, it is a large 1100 page biography. This book is well done as far as HTML and CSS. I do agree that if you have a book that has strange HTML or CSS it might confuse the FW. For example, some books have very long chapters and occasionally split a chapter across multiple HTML files. That might confuse the FW. And some books don't use H1 tags to start a chapter. That might also confuse the FW.

As far as I can see, the KPW treats each file as a chapter. A map in a fantasy book always has "1 minute left" on the bottom.

It probably does. I think Sony, Adobe, or ePub standard at one time placed a limit on the individual HTML file sizes. If the chapter didn't fit within that size limit, the publisher had to split it into two or more files. As a result, we still see some chapters split into multiple files when they probably don't need to be. Perhaps that is built into the software they use to write the books. Mostly though I suspect it is just poor publishing skills.

IIRC, Calibre splits pages after 260KB of text. That's a lot of text for one chapter already.
But yes, this sort of stuff is the reason why the Kindle messes up sometimes. You're reading, and it says "50 minutes to end of chapter", then read, suddenly it jumps from "1 minute to end of chapter" back to "10 minutes to end of chapter" (while you're still in the same chapter). Stuff such as maps and short intro's and such sometimes *really* messes it up. |

Is genre related to page numbers?
Quote:
Thus, the amount of options ranges from 2 to 4 and its possible the older published eBooks are missing one or two of them. |

The publisher/author has to include page numbers in the book before this option can display. I think page numbers are in a separate file. Any old Amazon books that have not been updated since the introduction of page numbers to the system, will of course not have them. Those Manchester volumes are really old. I read them in pBooks 30 years ago I think. Well the first two anyway.
If a book on Amazon.com has page numbers included, there is a notice in the book description saying it has real page numbers included. |

Just use Calibre and the Count Pages plugin, and you can have pages as short or long as you want, and page numbers in every book, no matter if the original book had them or not

The calibre generated page numbers are NOT the same. Calibre generates page numbers base on a number of characters. These do NOT match the actual page numbers found in the printed version of the book. The actual page numbers might not be necessary in many/most cases, but if they are in important to some one say in a classroom setting, then calibre page numbers will be as useless as location numbers.

When authors reference other works, can they use Amazon location numbers or are they restricted to paper page numbers?

I do not know if Amazon keeps the locations the same between different versions of the book, but I doubt that. Even if you'd add only a copyright page, or an introduction by another writer or something in a new edition, the location numbers would change. |
