I quite like these:

David Eddings Sparhawk (The Elenium and The Tamuli) trilogies and Belgarion (The Belgariad and The Malloreon) series.
R. A. Salvatore's Demon Wars series.
L. E. Modesitt, Jr. Saga of Recluse series.
Jack Vance's Lyonesse trilogy.
Katharine Kerr's Deverry Cycle.

These may also be to your liking:

Gene Wolfe's Urth books from the Book of the New Sun, the later ones are more sci-fi based.
Jack Vance's Dying Earth books.
Anne McCaffrey's Pern books.
Terry Brooks's Shannara books.

I am in the process of reading Book 1. It is interesting to read and then go back and watch the series episodes after. I like the similarities and differences. I like knowing more background information on the characters and I am gaining more familiarity with the names of everyone.

OK, silly question alert.
All the Game of Thrones books look alike to me, just a different colour on the cover. If I started reading at book 1, are they clearly marked as #2, #3. I find it very irritating when it's not clear which book comes next, and with the covers being so similar I could imagine me buying the same book twice.

Even though they each have different words printed on those covers?

The covers are titled differently but after each title there is "Book 1", "Book 2"...etc.

I believe there is an omnibus edition available, which avoids the problem (and also saves money).

Your profile, however, says that you have a Kindle. Amazon warn you if you try to buy the same book twice.

I'm thoughtfully enjoying it, currently about 25% of book 2. Bought the first 4 in a promo package for the Kindle. Wanted to figure out what was all the buzz about the hbo series. BTW, got a chance to watch the first episode and turned it off after the first 20 minutes or so - the desaturated looks and actors weren't up to my imagination, sorry.

Martin is a real talented writer, far more than, say, Dan Brown. He uses poetic language all the time, very melodic aliterations and such and rich imagery. It's not easy reading by all means, but the panorama framed by the narrative divided by so many points of view works marvelously.

I've had stop reading it for awhile because my reading queue keeps growing.

One of the things that really irritated me while watching that first episode: I have no clue what characters are thinking. The actor may look bored or happy, but in the book the narrative exposes his psique.

Actually, this is a problem with all art besides literature (and comics)

They will provided the publisher doesn't stop selling a given edition and put up a new one with a different ASIN. When that happens the old edition disappears from the books page (you can of course still download it if you had bought it) as opposed to how with various paper editions they're usually still listed even if Amazon doesn't have it for sale (as a new book) anymore.
