His Holiness the Dalai Lama: A Message of Spiritual Wisdom is free at B&N, Kobo and Amazon.

Quote:
In October 2012, the Dalai Lama visited the Kurukulla Center for Buddhist Studies in Medford, Massachusetts and addressed approximately 1,800 residents from this diverse New England community.

To commemorate the one-year anniversary of his Holiness' visit, Comcast NBCUniversal presents His Holiness The Dalai Lama: A Message of Spiritual Wisdom to inform readers about the impact he has around the world.

The Dalai Lama is a well-known figure, with millions of followers through social media channels, and within all parts of the globe. Yet his history, background, and the scope of his accomplishments often go unnoticed.

His Holiness The Dalai Lama: A Message of Spiritual Wisdom explains how the religious leader was first chosen in 1937 and provides an overview of his political and cultural history. It also celebrates the way he brings communities together through a message of peace and nonviolence.

Included are excerpts from the Dalai Lama’s address to attendees of the Kurukulla Center, discussion questions, a glossary of terms, and select resources.

In addition, the book also features an introduction by Ann Curry of NBC News, as well as her exclusive interview with the Dalai Lama on Today.

Flags of Our Fathers
by James Bradley

is $1.99 at Amazon

http://www.amazon.com/Flags-of-Our-F...of+our+fathers

Below is the blurb
In this unforgettable chronicle of perhaps the most famous moment in American military history, James Bradley has captured the glory, the triumph, the heartbreak, and the legacy of the six men who raised the flag at Iwo Jima. Here is the true story behind the immortal photograph that has come to symbolize the courage and indomitable will of America.

In February 1945, American Marines plunged into the surf at Iwo Jima—and into history. Through a hail of machine-gun and mortar fire that left the beaches strewn with comrades, they battled to the island's highest peak. And after climbing through a landscape of hell itself, they raised a flag.

Now the son of one of the flagraisers has written a powerful account of six very different young men who came together in a moment that will live forever.

To his family, John Bradley never spoke of the photograph or the war. But after his death at age seventy, his family discovered closed boxes of letters and photos. In Flags of Our Fathers, James Bradley draws on those documents to retrace the lives of his father and the men of Easy Company. Following these men's paths to Iwo Jima, James Bradley has written a classic story of the heroic battle for the Pacific's most crucial island—an island riddled with Japanese tunnels and 22,000 fanatic defenders who would fight to the last man.

But perhaps the most interesting part of the story is what happened after the victory. The men in the photo—three were killed during the battle—were proclaimed heroes and flown home, to become reluctant symbols. For two of them, the adulation was shattering. Only James Bradley's father truly survived, displaying no copy of the famous photograph in his home, telling his son only: "The real heroes of Iwo Jima were the guys who didn't come back."

Few books ever have captured the complexity and furor of war and its aftermath as well as Flags of Our Fathers. A penetrating, epic look at a generation at war, this is history told with keen insight, enormous honesty, and the passion of a son paying homage to his father. It is the story of the difference between truth and myth, the meaning of being a hero, and the essence of the human experience of war.

Hikers' Stories from the Appalachian Trail by Kathryn Fulton

Quote:
Hikers of all types and backgrounds--thru-hikers and section hikers, northbounders and southbounders, new hikers and experienced backpackers--share their stories in this collection of highlights from twenty-one Appalachian Trail blogs. The excerpts here span the whole length of the trail and include stories of ice storms and tornados, accounts of trail magic and surprising generosity, encounters with snakes and other wildlife, descriptions of wilderness beauty, and hikers' musings on living life to the fullest. Together, they capture the trail experience through many different perspectives.

People Can't Drive You Crazy If You Don't Give Them the Keys by Mike Bechtle is currently free. It's published by Christian publisher Revell, but I flipped through the book and while it's clear that the author is Christian, the advice is pretty general.

Quote:
Strange as it may seem, other people are not nearly as committed to our happiness as we are. In fact, sometimes they seem like they're on a mission to make us miserable! There's always that one person. The one who hijacks your emotions and makes you crazy. The one who seems to thrive on drama. If you could just "fix" that person, everything would be better. But we can't fix other people--we can only make choices about ourselves. In this cut-to-the-chase book, communication expert Mike Bechtle shows readers that they don't have to be victims of other people's craziness. With commonsense wisdom and practical advice that can be implemented immediately, Bechtle gives readers a proven strategy to handle crazy people.More than just offering a set of techniques, Bechtle offers a new perspective that will change readers' lives as they deal with those difficult people who just won't go away.

Very cool. These will add a lot to my reading of Patrick O'Brian's Aubrey/Maturin series.

Guide to Trapping by Jim Spencer

Quote:
Trapping has become somewhat of a lost art, but interest in the sport is as strong as ever thanks to a stable fur market and a growing need to control mammal populations or remove nuisance animals. In Guide to Trapping, Jim Spencer covers strategies for successfully harvesting popular species such as raccoon, muskrat, mink, otter, beaver, coyote, gray fox, red fox, bobcat, skunk, and opossum. His entertaining and informative writing will appeal to trappers of all levels. Spencer discusses trap styles and the basics of establishing and working a trapline, including techniques for fastening and adjusting traps and a species-by-species review of trapping tactics for the country s most pursued furbearers. The field-tested techniques, carefully explained and illustrated, will help trappers make sets that deliver maximum results.

The Essential Guide To Prepping : 45 Survival Tips For Beginners by David Pearson

Quote:
Unexpected Doesn't Have To Mean Unprepared.

In today's fragile economic, political, environmental and social climate it's easy to see the necessity for becoming more self reliant. Disasters such as Hurricane Katrina, the Japan earthquake and nuclear disaster, and the Boston bombing have relayed to us again and again that no one is left untouched in tragedies such as these. Like the butterfly effect, disaster affects us all on a global scale, further bringing home the importance of having a plan, and making preparations to keep ourselves and our loved ones safe. It is simply a matter of defining what you feel is important for you to prepare for in the event of an emergency, whether it be something as simple and basic as taking measures to prepare for an unexpected power outage, your vehicle breaking down, job loss, or illness. It may also include environmental preparations for fire, flood, or earthquake. This book will help you to rethink your back up plans or create new ones should you not already have measures in place.
