Looks interesting. I'm downloading the app right now to see what it's like. I already have access to two e-libraries free, but sometimes there are books that neither one of them have. It's nice, too, to be able to borrow a novel you know you're probably going to read only once.

I joined Scribe last week, and so far I'm loving it. I found several books I've been wanting to read, but could not get from any of the libraries I belong to. And I'll probably pay for the year membership when my free trial is up. I read between 6 to 8 books a month, I'm sure I'll get my moneys worth.

Curious. What are some of the books? And where are you located (country?) It might show in your sig or avatar, but now that I'm writing this I can't see it...

I'm not particularly keen on the subscription thing generally speaking, but even if I were, no eink devices support = instant fail

Yeah.

I'd pay every month for an ebook renting service. I could use my Nexus 7 but I'd rather read on my nook.

I might be willing to pay for it and use my tablet but they would have to widen up the publisher base more.

I would consider a monthly service, but only if it were available in epub form so I could read on my e-ink reader.

I tried the app - without subscribing - but there were too many "not available in your country" messages when I tried previews.

Yeah, that's a deal-breaker. I'd pay $10 a month for a subscription service with a decent catalog (not even great), as long as I could put the books on my e-reader. I tend to treat discretionary spending very simply: if the sum of my vices comes to less than the pack-a-day smoking habit I used to have, it's fair game! Scribd isn't even a pack-a-month habit

I'm a little lost. I read through some of the details and it seems you can read it on...something. You download an app (to a tablet or phone?) and then you can read the books? But you aren't allowed to download to a regular e-reader? Am I understanding it correctly?

Pretty much, yes.

This is from their announcement:

Quote:
On what devices can I use Scribd?

You can read books on Scribd through your web-browser using any computer, or using the web-browser built into almost all smartphones and tablets. Additionally, you can install our apps on your iPhone or iPad (iOS 6 is required) or Android device to store books for offline reading.

Readers with web-connected tablets like the Kindle Fire or Nook HD can use Scribd. However, E-Ink based readers like the Amazon Kindle or Nook Simple Touch are not supported.

I just saw another post on the front page about the smashwords agreement with scribd.

I know a lot of people do read on other than e-readers, but by excluding e-readers...I don't think it will fly. As a writer, I get a free one year membership, but I'd have to read on my computer/app. Guess why I bought a reader? I DON'T WANT TO READ ON MY COMPUTER.

I don't have a phone or tablet. I guess most people do so perhaps for the average reader it will work out. However, my guess is that early adopters have to be avid readers. Well, I guess avid readers with a tablet.

Sigh. Well, I wasn't the target market then.

Almost too many books available at my library that I want to read. pretty sure I will be long dead before I can get to them all even at 5-10 a week. They just keep getting more.
Still if I wasn't so fortunate, $47 a year is a reasonable price for someone who reads at least a book a week and is happy with their selection.
