There's really no problem with reading with gloves. Just press the power button to start and then press the page forward button. You can't make annotations with gloves since you can't use the stylus. But reading is really no problem at all. This is such an elegant device, I'm sure you're going to have a lot of fun with it during your walks in winter. Just take care you buy an original Sony case with your Ereader to protect it properly.

@HarryT doesn't the IR-source require a higher bezel than capacitive touch and also react to other objects ?
I like using both capacitive touch and resistive touch, what's the benefit of the IR solution ? |

If the specs are true, I'll skip this.

Here's the interview/article I was thinking of earlier where someone fairly high up at Sony was commenting about them not doing a light (based in part on their poor experience with the PRS-700).

We were talking about capacitive touch screens. They don't work if you're wearing gloves.

Cool!
Has buttons, no light, IR touch, better resolution than the 650/T1. Everything that I could want. This might be a replacement for my wife's 350 that is starting to have battery problems. I no longer have the manual dexterity to even contemplate replacing the battery. One of the advantages of IR touch is that I can make a stylus from almost anything. One of my favourites was made from a length of 1/4" square wood that I sharpened in a pencil sharpener. Won't roll away. It's best to paint the tip with black paint since a very thin piece of wood might be IR transparent. I also made a stylus from an aluminum tent peg (basically a length of 1/4" aluminum rod). Works well with IR. Despite being a conductor (metal) it does not work with any capacitive screen that I have tried it with. |

So while this will work for normal people in cold weather, if my bare fingers often don't work, I doubt all the conductive threads I can fit into the fingertips will work. ![]() |

Curious decision not to include a toggle-able front light, if it really won't have that feature. I think the folks at Kobo and Amazon will be pleased.

I like front light; I just strongly dislike the light diffusion layer. Unevenness issues aside, it does something to my eyes. It might just be psychosomatic but I can't shake it.
So no, not everybody loves the front light. |

I've been using an eReader for quite some time, but apparently am out of touch with some of the terminology, i.e., Capacitive Touch as opposed to IR, etc. Also, what do the following refer to: CAD $158 (~US $150) and CHF 188 (~US $200)? I was delighted with my Sony Reader once I set it up, but I really had no frame of reference. I believe I have the PRS 600 model. Having purchased Kindle PW within the past few months, I can attest to how much easier it is on the eyes. Page-turning is easier as long as I remember to keep the touch light. The reason I haven't totally abandoned the Sony is mainly because you can often get certain titles the night BEFORE they're released elsewhere. If you're someone who eagerly awaits the release of books by favorite authors, this can be important. That said, it's about the only advantage I've seen in the Sony Reader. Now that the Reader store has an iPad app, I'm not sure it's worth purchasing a Sony device. Although I do find iPads too cumbersome to hold comfortably while reading, I am thinking the best way to go would be to get the mini iPad which has multiple reading apps. I know there have been problems with the mini overheating, but if those have been corrected, it seems like it might be the best option. I'm not sure how the pricing runs on the minis, though.

Only if your eyes can handle the backlit light. In the end, it really depends on individual.

From this image:
![]() I notice 2 things: 1. Unlike the prs-t1/prs-t2 light cover, I can't find any place to place AAA batteries. 2. The black reader with that black case is placed in an inclined way. This suggests, something on the top back position is supporting the reader with case, which is the light part. This might imply the light is CLIPPED onto the back, either detachable or non-detachable with the case. The other thing is, we don't know what the back of the light clip is, b/c that will tell wether this IS a lighted case or acutally a case with a light clip. Funny thing is, the back of the light case is the only blind spot that left us to wonder. I cannot convince myself this is actually a light case (like T1/T2 official light case), where I cannot find a spot in the picture that tells me where the light battery is placed in the case. Or maybe sony design team actually did decide to throw a light battery on the back of the case... Also if you look closely to the red, and white case, look how "clean" their top edge is, can you believe that there will be a light neck coming out of there? This makes me believe that it is a detachable light clip even harder. My guess is, this is another smoke bomb sony drops on us, making us guessing over wether t3 is front lit or not. However, I will consider myself wrong, if sony dare to show the back of that light case. SONY, WHY DONT YOU JUST SHOW US THE BACK OF THAT PRS-T3 LIGHT CASE?
