I have been playing with my new Note 8 for a few days now and enjoying it. It is small enough to be truly portable, large enough to be truly useful, and the jury is still out for me on the spen and it's applications, which have potential. It is not going to replace my Paper White. The e-ink screen is far easier on the eyes for long periods of constant reading, though I understand others feel differently. It is, however, more than adequate for those times I carry only one device.

I was interested to see that Samsung includes an application called Readers Hub, a quite adequate capable simple reader which links with Samsung's own 'ecosystem' including its own ebook store. Downloading a free ebook from that store combined with a little experimentation suggests that ebooks from this store are infected with an Alf-Resistant strain of drm. Presently only a minor irritant, as many more acceptable alternatives are available. However, the spread of drm in its current forms carries with it many evils and is not in my view to be encouraged.

I just fell in love. Was checking out Papyrus android app because much as I like Lecture Note and S-note they both Can get on my last nerve. I stumbled across what bills itself as a "stylus based wordprocessor". It's called Stylus Write... watched the video demo of Papyrus in Play Store then stumbled across a Stylus Write video... I was instantly smitten. Here is that video:

I think that shows how powerful a tool an active stylus can be. Hope it gives the OP more insight and options.

Best of all the app is FREE!

Nevermind. I needed to update Adobe Flash.

Well I just bought the Galaxy Note 8 at Costco. $349 on sale. Have it charging now.

Thanks for the DRM infection info on Samsung's ebooks. Alf is my good friend and I won't buy any ebook he doesn't approve of.

This is the app I have been using lately, together with S-note, and I really really like it. I use S-Note when I need to pass on the docs, and write if the notes are just for my personal use.

Congrats Carol !

I think you'll really enjoy your Note 8, I certainly don't regret getting mine. Although I was really not sure it was going to cover my needs, the seller in the shop insisted I take it and use it for a day of two and return it if I was not convinced. As this chain is known in France for its excellent return policy, I tried and decided after 2 hours that this was a keeper. This was 4 weeks ago, and I discover new things every day, also thanks to the Google+ Group, where new Tips and tricks appear almost daily.

So far I really like it. I'm used to the iPad so it's a bit of a learning curve Some things I like better on the iPad some I like better on the note I thought when I was playing around last night that I saw a user guide but now I can't find it.

Also, anyone know how to make the keyboard go down when in a reply box etc. On my iPad I just tap the bottom right and it disappears

So far so good. I probably still like the iPad the best, but some things I do like better on the Note. I really like the thin stylus. The size is good too. 8" is the sweet spot.

The return policy is the reason I bought from Costco. I have 3 months to return if I dont like it. But I'm pretty sure its a keeper.

Outstanding! I hope it works for you. From this & the other thread in this forum there Aremoethan a few fellow N8 users. That should make it fun to share to learn together.

I'll share something I only recently came to understand about READING MODE.

You can customize what apps will activate the mode. First if you don't know READING MODE is a nice way to help add flexibility in.controlling display lighting by warming the effective color temperature. Sort of like the Lux app I ran on my Win laptops but with less control. Btw, this mode can help people to try and reduce eyestrain.

[Large images - Moderator:]
Spoiler:

Go to SETTINGS and find the display option or press & hold the READING MODE button atihetop of the screen:

Here is what my list looks like right now:

Just press the ADD button to see a list of pretty much all your currently installed apps. The list lets you select → 20 apps.

Later you can add or remove apps as needed.

Oh, selecting a case is, well an adventure. Rather than reinvent that wheel I'd be happy to post links to threads elsewhere. And maybe selecting a case deserves it's own thread.

Most of all hope you have fun learning your new toy..., err....tool!

One last fast tip... you might consider disabling the SMART STAY device setting. It just doesn't work aswell as you might hope and you can save power with it disabled.

Thanks for the tip on reading mode. Added my Kindle app. Will add some others too. Mine came with a sleeve but may get a case.

what/where is Smart Stay

Found that there is a button on the stylus. I guess you can hold it down and select stuff to copy to clipboard. Haven't found the clipboard yet though.

is there any type of user guide besides the tiny printed few pages that came with the Note?

BTW. Where is ghe other thread you mentioned on the Note 8?

FYI

Staples (US) is running a sale on the Galaxy Note 8 at $329 through September 9. In-store only. The store I went to had an opened package so they gave me an additional 10% off. Total cost $297.

I usually like using a stylus with my capacitive devices but the s-pen is so much better, more accurate. For me this 8" tablet is the perfect size.

Wow. Good price. I really like the pen too. Much more accurate than the thick stylus.

I tap on the screen outside the keyboard, and the keyboard disappears, but maybe there is another way to do it.

Regarding cases, I got the Samsung Book Case (also called Diary Cover in some countries) in a pack with the device for 349,-€ (it was a special offer), and I could even choose the color I wanted so I got the lime one. I really like it, very versatile and light. I also have a amazon Red leather cover, which I got for 5€ so a very, very good deal.
Both covers are fine, the lime one is very light and fine, but in the 60º position you cannot access the power and volume buttons. TBH I would rather have it the other way around. The red cover is a tad heavier and thicker of course, the mechanism is wholly different but for that price it's a steal.

I end up using the lime most of the time, but when I am watching a movie (twice a week maybe) I switch to the red one.

Sometimes that does work for me. Haha. Cause I just said it now it worked.

Right now I'm not using any cover

BTW I'm using the writing to text feature, pretty cool. Does anyone use a "shield" for the screen.
