yes but consider a normal user, not particularly computer literate who simply wants to read books and buy them using the device: this person is bound to be "victim" of firmware updates. My bet is that there are loads of these types of users (admittedly based on a very unrepresentative poll of the people I know, though I know many people ).

I'm not computer literate enough to deal with adding or subtracting from electronic program memories. I have enough trouble just dealing with e-mail. It took me months to figure out how to get e-mail onto my cell phone. That is WHY I don't allow computers to change what is already working well.

Granted, there are security needs that must be addressed. Fortunately there are computer geeks who know how to deal with them, that hire out for not too much money. Otherwise, if I have a device that is working properly, I don't make changes. I don't let companies make changes just because it's the newest system. And I certainly don't let computers change themselves, other than anti-virus and firewall updates.

When it comes to e-readers, I want one that allows me to read my books. For anything more complex, I'll use a computer. I don't expect my motorcycle to fly like a plane. It works as a motorcycle. I don't ask for more.

sorry Stitchawl, perhaps I was not clear: I definitely was not disputing your taste, and good for you that you, like most people here, are comfortable using Calibre.

I was simply trying to reinforce Aceflor's point that it is very possible to have trouble simply by following Kobo's instructions to the letter: the first time you connect the device will do a firmware update that can hang (e.g. it happened to my niece). You replied to Aceflor that this is the reason why you never connect, but there are less savy users who do and get "busted", that's all.

As my mother used to say, you catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. Which leaves the question of why you would want to catch flies.

I'd have to disagree with you. Relatively few of the posts regarding bricked Kobos are from people who automatically upgraded using the Kobo servers. The majority seem to come from people who have attempted to modify their SD cards, sideloaded firmware versions that do not support the hardware or otherwise (mis)used their Kobo in an unsupported fashion.

As I commented earlier, anyone who does this without a backup of the internal uSD card to allow a return to a known good condition is taking unnecessary chances.

Looking a quite a few of the threads in this forum, "important" seems to be the last word that would come to mind. Firmware 2.8.1, Pass or Fail? Firmware 2.6.1 Pass or Fail? On A scale of 1 to 10 how happy are you with the Way Firmware is being released? What Color is your Touch?

David

Calibre is the first computer program in which all I have to do it point it in the right direction and it does the rest. I won't attempt to use plug-ins or modified scripts (I wish I could but that is way beyond my pay grade.) I just push a button and it does the rest.

Because they are flying around the d*** fruit and won't leave the kitchen. But that old saying is wrong. Vinegar does catch flies and kills em too

Why do you want to catch flies? According to a certain German designer to stock your new protein generator. Yummy, maggots anyone? I could not make this stuff up! Google it. May I be the first to say, "Ugh!" My apologies to such epicureans as Bear Grylls.

Anyhoo, on another front, my Touch soft bricked itself on an OTA firmware upgrade around 2.6.1... I was lucky enough to experience the restore to a Neanderthal firmware of yore at about 1.9.? and the resulting round of updates. Fun, fun, fun.

I think one must consider Kobo's past performance prior to giving people crappola about soft bricks or those requiring images. From personal experience, their updating process is hardly bulletproof. The troubling part is that it should be.

I think it'd be great if a base image for each device could be maintained for public download at either Kobo's website or a place of their choosing for those who require one. This nonsense of having to beg for one when needed when an official one should be available is a bit much. And no, I'm not poking around under the hood on mine. It came with just the right amount of instability baked in! I pity those with a Touch without a removable internal SDHC if they encounter an update issue.

Where I live, grubs, bugs, worms, etc. are the normal 'after-school' treat for kids, and sold by vendors with carts outside the school gates. You can also find them sold in all the local markets. The grubs and larva are very, very sweet! Personally, I prefer a KitKat bar...

I think that in general, the sellers are in too much of a hurry getting their product to the marketplace to beat out the competition. There isn't enough time spent de-bugging the products. Or, as the case with automobiles, the makers know that there are defects, but cost-analysis says it's better to sell the product now, and deal with the problems later.

A while back one of my collection of cousins sent me a some photos of her eating a buffalo burger with maggots at a fair in California. She included a closeup of the maggots on the burger. Ruined my enjoyment of one of my favourite treats for a few months. On the other hand, it did add more evidence to my belief that Californians are definitely a strange crew.

David

Why would eating buffalo meat ruin your appetite for other things?

I think it was the maggots that ruined the appetite. In North American society, Americans and Canadians, we really have a problem getting our head wrapped around the idea of eating insects of any kind for any reason!

I'll tell you what... They don't do a hell of a lot for MY appetite either! We had a cook/housekeeper some years ago, a big fat, jolly woman who could cook up some of the very best food I'd ever eaten, who always had a bag full of larva or grubs in her apron pocket to munch on. She kept offering them to us, and we tried them out of good manners, but frankly, I prefer a cheeseburger or Oreo cookies.
