If you have an older Kindle Fire and read lots of Dutch books, maybe sideloading and installing the latest Android Kindle APK might be an option. However, IIRC, some Kindle Fire users who installed a sideloaded Kindle APK in addition to the stock Kindle app, encountered some technical issues. If you have a brand-new Fire with Dutch user interface support, you might have to download the Dutch dictionaries via the dictionary selection dialog box. |

Do you know if I could revert back to the original reader app in case the technical issues are not something I would want to live with? If I back up the original app and reinstall? I guess worst-case scenario I could always factory reset, though that would entail TONS of work afterward to sideload all apps I had again, etc, etc, etc... |

1. Rename your custom dictionary so that it has the same name as one of the original monolingual dictionaries. 2. Change its ASIN with JMME so that it also matches the ASIN of the dictionary that you're going to replace it with. 3. Replace one of the original dictionaries with your custom dictionary. According to some Kindle Fire users, the second step isn't necessary, but I doubt it, because it's necessary for Kindle apps. For Dutch this is a moot point anyway, because no freeware dictionary is as good as the van Dale dictionaries. Quote:

To follow up on this post. I have been investigating and calling Amazon and Van Dale (of the prominent Dutch dictionaries) and it seems that now all Kindles from 2013 and newer have the Dutch dictionary installed once upgraded to the version after 5.4.4.2 (which is 5.6.0.1.6). So that's good news for those that have a newer Kindle.
I, however, have a first gen Paperwhite (2012) which only goes to 5.4.4.2 and I won't be able to get this update unless I buy a new Kindle. Is there a way to extract that dictionary from a newer Kindle and install it, use it on my first gen Paperwhite? Any input would be much appreciated. |

Assuming you can borrow a friend's newer device...
The dictionaries will be stored in the documents folder, I think newer devices save them to [userstore]/documents/dictionaries/ but either way... just copy it off and sideload it to your Kindle. I don't know if the free dictionaries are DRMed, you might have to use Apprentice Alf's tools. |

Just sold my Kindle and bought a refurbished Paperwhite II, so no jumping through hoops anymore.

Just to follow up. The Dutch to Dutch dictionary (Hedendaags Nederlands) is DRM-protected, but differently than other DRM protected books licensed to the Kindle's serial number. I can't seem to undo it but it seems there's no need for it either. The two other dictionaries (NL to EN and EN to NL) are MOBI formatted and don't seem to be DRM protected.
I have copied all three dictionaries with Calibre to my wife's Paperwhite I and all three work like a charm. She is using the same Amazon account so maybe that's the reason they work, but maybe not. At least I don't have to replace her Kindle too. ![]() Anyhow, happy Easter! ![]() |
