Looks like the start of a trilogy and definitely not like some of here other books (then again, this one is published by Orbit). Haven't read it, but added it to my TBR list.

Bought it some time ago from Kobo, with a discount. Not bad, Steampunk sort of and magic.
The second book is out already, and I can say she knows how to write

Germline (Book 1 of The Subterrene War Trilogy)
by T. C. McCarthy

is $2.99 at Amazon, Kobo and B&N

Amazon Link: http://www.amazon.com/Germline-The-S...3689101&sr=1-1

Kobo Link: http://www.kobobooks.com/ebook/Germl...fweok8DDlw&r=1

B&N Link: http://www.barnesandnoble.com/w/germ...=9780316128186

Below is the blurb.

Germline (n.) the genetic material contained in a cellular lineage which can be passed to the next generation. Also: secret military program to develop genetically engineered super-soldiers (slang).

War is Oscar Wendell's ticket to greatness. A reporter for The Stars and Stripes, he has the only one way pass to the front lines of a brutal war over natural resources buried underneath the icy, mineral rich mountains of Kazakhstan.

But war is nothing like he expected. Heavily armored soldiers battle genetically engineered troops hundreds of meters below the surface. The genetics-the germline soldiers-are the key to winning this war, but some inventions can't be un-done. Some technologies can't be put back in the box.

Kaz will change everything, not least Oscar himself. Hooked on a dangerous cocktail of adrenaline and drugs, Oscar doesn't find the war, the war finds him.

To celebrate its fifth anniversary, Tor.com is giving away an e-book with all the original short fiction that's been published there, 151 stories by a bunch of big genre names and up-and-coming new talents. Link.

You have to be a registered member to download, but registration is immediate and relatively simple. Some people are reporting login issues; there's an e-mail address in comment #14 at the link if you're stuck.

The e-book is available in PDF, mobi, and epub. It looks like they've simply combined individual e-book versions of the stories into one gigantic bundle (the PDF is 3800 pages). You can see the full TOC here.

^Thanks for posting that. I didn't want to stretch out the thread with a long list, and hadn't thought of spoiler code.

Part of the reason the files are so big is that every story has its own front matter from when it was sold individually, so there are 151 pages announcing that the e-book is DRM-free, 151 covers, 151 title pages, and 151 individual, mostly one-item TOCs. But it's free content that would ordinarily cost about $150, so I can't complain.

Can anyone recommend a simple epub editor? I could unzip and do some searches and just remove source files (if named consistently), but an editor might make a nicer result file (if it easily allows removing subfiles)
