The Confession (Mike Daley Mysteries) by Sheldon Siegel

From Publishers Weekly
Lawyer and ex-priest Mike Daley is back again in Siegel's fifth legal thriller (Final Verdict, etc.), this time going to bat for Father Ramon Aguirre, his longtime friend and beloved local priest in San Francisco's Mission District. Aguirre is accused of murdering his parishioner Maria Concepcion, a fiercely competitive lawyer who became something of a celebrity after instigating and successfully settling several abuse cases against the Roman Catholic Church. Her latest suit alleging sexual impropriety by a prominent priest has come to an abrupt halt with her death, and the prosecutor is claiming that Ramon, whose fingerprints are found on the murder weapon and her naked body, is guilty. Daley believes in Ramon's innocence and agrees to help him pro bono despite the archdiocese's suspicious insistence that they be his sole representation in the case. Incriminating evidence against Ramon continues to appear, including the possibility that the priest has fathered Maria's unborn child. As Daley moves from the drug and prostitution-ridden underbelly of San Francisco, where auto parts and offers of legal aid are exchanged for cooperation, to the tension-filled courtroom and the hushed offices of the church, it gradually becomes apparent that Ramon isn't the only character with a lot at stake in this intelligent, timely thriller.

Fbone,
Had to come back & thank you for pointing out this author - strangely, I hadn't seen his stuff before. Just like a good special-offers junkie, I finished Adrenaline and The Last Minute, now I'm eagerly waiting for next week's release of Downfall.
And Amazon's got some 2.99 deals I picked up too...

They's got me hooked!

Seriously, I like this guy - thanks for helping me find somebody new.

Funny. I remembered this series and had to go check to be sure I didn't already have it. Apparently B&N gave away the first book in the series sometime in the past, probably another Friday Freebie, so now I have the first and second books if I decide to read it.

Just got a price drop on Under Witch Moon by Maria Schneider
It's .99 at B&N & Amazon

Blurb:

Adriel should have known that with a werewolf, it never stopped with just one body. She would have gone to the police after witnessing Dolores' death, but she wasn't certain the killer she saw was responsible for the other murders. Besides, the police didn't believe in werewolves, and they weren't going to believe she was a witch either so what could she tell them?

She kept her eyes and ears open while she tried to help her latest client escape the clutches of a voodoo witch, but things went from bad to worse when more bodies turned up. She was greatly relieved when she met White Feather, an undercover cop. Unfortunately, he wasn't convinced she was innocent of all wrong-doing.

Jeff Abbott also wrote a mystery series about 20 years ago, featuring a small town librarian in Texas. I read and liked all four books in the series in DTB, but sadly the ebooks are agency and I'm not going to pay agency prices to rebuy books I own in paper.

These were more classic mysteries than thrillers, which this new series seems to be from the blurbs, but if you like the author, they might be worth a try. The books were: Do Unto Others, The Only Good Yankee, Promises of Home, and Distant Blood. The first one won an Agatha and a Macavity for best first novel.

They may be agency, but £3.05 seems like a very reasonable price to me (Amazon UK).

US$ 7.99 here (or £5.30, according to the currency conversion website I use), which is actually MORE than the Amazon new mass-market paperback price of $7.19. It's been discussed so many times I hate to mention it again, but IMHO, it's nuts to have the e-version costing more than the DTB. Aaaah, the fruits of agency...

£3.05 (about US$ 4.60) is a bit more than my usual self-imposed max of $3.99 for a book I already own in DTB, but not totally outrageous. But then my max of $3.99 is only for books I really love, and although I liked these, I didn't ***love*** them, so probably only worth about $2.99 to me to re-buy. Guess I'm just a cheapskate.

You're very welcome. I have to credit B&N for making this an "Author Spotlight" for the week as I haven't heard of him either

Effective marketing.

These two look interesting (and free on Amazon):

The Unkindness of Strangers (The Hollywood Murder Mysteries)

Nice Guys Finish Dead (The Hollywood Murder Mysteries)

Peter S. Fischer is a prolific writer producer with over 25 years of experience in network television. Among his many credits is "Murder, She Wrote" which he created with the well known television team of Richard Levinson and William Link. As producer he was the winner of two Golden Globe awards from the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for Best Television Drama and also received an "Edgar" from The Mystery Writers of America, in which he is an active member. In addition to "Murder, She Wrote", the author was also involved for many years with "Colombo" starring Peter Falk, first as Story Editor and later as producer. Ack!

"Nice Guys Finish Dead"
is unreadable, due to its formatting.

Using Heuristic Formatting in calibre makes it look like a PDF (or txt) file, which is even worse.

The other title is fine, although it will need to go through calibre if you like justified right margins (as I do).

It’s a beautiful afternoon in May and set up for The Black Hills Fiber Gathering is in full swing. Martha Williamson, owner of The Spider’s Web—a shop specializing in spinning and weaving, is looking forward to four glorious days of selling and talking fiber and fiber tools as she organizes her booth and gets her alpaca settled in their stall. Then Falcor, her Great Pyrenees, finds a body, and she is pulled into the agony of a terrible accident. Or is it? As one person after another seems to have reason for wanting the victim dead, Martha is more and more certain there was no accident. However if it was murder, who did it and why? When there is another attack and Martha is threatened, it becomes obvious that she needs to find the answers. With her steadfast Great Pyrenees, Denali and Falcor, by her side, Martha begins to unravel the mystery, but will she be fast enough to forestall a killer’s hand?
