I bought 15 at 99¢ and I debated buying from Sony so I could use a cart and make one purchase, but the tax would have been $1.20 which is enough to buy another book, so I made 15 individual purchases through Kobo...

Kobo always charges sales tax on any books by the big six...at least they do for me. (I'm in the U.S.) It doesn't matter where I buy them, any books from HarperCollins, Simon & Schuster, Penguin, Macmillan, Hachette & Random House. I always get charge sales tax.

If I buy a book from Random House I get charge a Sales and County tax. I first noticed this when buying from Kobo. I think this is why Random House sales tax is always higher than the other five.

For awhile last year Kobo charge me sales and county tax on every purchase. It finally stopped last fall and now only get charge sales tax on the Big Six books.

Sales tax? What are sales tax? Little sharp dealies that a store uses to stick their sales up on a bulletin board?

I also noticed that only volumes 1 and 3 of the C. S. Lewis letters were on sale. Volume 2 was $14.44.

I thought 99c was 29,679,453,342 m/s (In a vacuum, of course, and ignoring all those pesky relativity problems)

It's a combination of the state you live in and the states that the seller is in.

Kobo does try (or did, 'til I "moved") to charge me tax, regardless of the publisher.

I'm in Alabama and I've never been charged sales tax from Kobo. When I've purchased Kindle books with the $1 vouchers, I was charged a $1, but on some occasions, I've purchased a 99 cent book and paid $1.07 or $1.08. but I've never paid sales tax on physical purchases from Amazon. Strange.

Canadians should 'move" to Alberta as there is no PST here. With how high taxes can be in places like Ontario, it can save some $.

Amazon has a "physical presence" in NJ, so they charge me sales tax.
