I'm currently without a husband, but it would depend on how much time we're able to spend together normally. I'm just as likely to be watching a movie or TV, or reading or playing a video game or... Yeah, so it's not about choosing a book over a movie or vice versa, it's about whether or not watching the movie counts as valuable QT for us as a couple.

Right now I'm torn between playing a video game or reading a book.
I feel a little too tired to read so if I start I may stop half an hour later.
But not tired enough to stay away from a video game ...

Books, movies, or video games, it doesn't matter to me. Fun is fun and I like doing all those things. Variety is good.

Go and play Planescape: Torment.

Then you can play a video game, and also read and actually experience one of the best stories I've ever come across.

My husband keeps buying videos that he thinks I'll like, and I probably would, but on the whole I don't care for tv or movies... they give me headaches. I don't know whether it's the flicker effect or what, but I can watch one 1-hour tv show in a day or two, and that's my limit. This has nothing to do with snobbery and everything to do with self-protection.

I don't distain TV. I disdain the crop of drek that passes for entertainment currently on the standard 4 or 5 channels I can receive over the air (actually a bit more than that now with digital). And I surely don't disdain movies, I just can't see paying ridiculous prices when I can wait a month for the DVD.

For *me* a book is just much more entertaining.

I've actually started to read much more lately, and watch less movies. It's cheaper that way

A 700 page book costing €5 lasts much longer than a 2 hour movie.

But that's why God made DVDs.
There are some movies I can watch over and over again. Very few books of mine get a full re-read, at least more than once every large number of years.

After all day's work and performing bed time routine (including reading books) to my 5yo it is usually 8.30 pm when my day is over (or not if there are still chores) My head is "rectangular" or "6:9" as we say here, and I really, really have no mind at all for a film. I need to go to my cave to have silence. I read some rubbish on ipad and then books. Therefore I watch 3 films per year. I just record them for later. I should watch just a bit more and husband would like me to join but just no can do. And I love to read in bed until I drop dead.

This is a dilemma my hubby and I been having. He is a TV watcher. I am not. I prefer to read but I do enjoy movies. We canceled our cable and got a Roku. So he watches that. He gets into a show and watches every episodes from beginning to end. These are old shows I grew up watching. I have no desire to watch them again. So he watches TV with his headphones while sitting in his chair and I read while lounging on the sofa. It works for the most part.

When he wants me to watch a movie with him. We can never decide on anything to watch. We use to watch TV and movies all the time together but as the actors we grew up with got old he refuses to watch anything new I want to watch because he doesn't recognize the names. There are several movies I like to watch but he is not interested and no I am not one of the girls who watch chick fliks. I may read mostly romance but I prefer action or science fiction and fantasy when I watch something. He use to like them but now he says they are all nothing but special effects and goes watches his old movies from the 90s. I don't rewatch movies unless it's something I really like (National Treasure, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings just to name a few) He can watch a movie over and over and over.

The only show I watch on TV is Once Upon a Time so we do watch that together. For awhile we were watching Merlin together but he started watching episodes at work and I got behind. He is very big on that If we both are interested in a show...I like to space the episodes apart or may be busy doing what most wives do. cooking, cleaning...etc He will watch one right after another and does not like to be disturb at all. If he has to hit the pause button...I get the look...So due to his obsessive behavior I usually lose track of the series I was watching so I just give up and go read a book.

Be it far from me to give him the look when he expects me to stop reading or listening to my audio book. I'd better pay attention to every word or I'm too obsessed with my reading when I sat for three days trying to get a few words from him while he watches TV and got the look every time I asked a question or made a comment.

This presumes a choice will be made ahead of time.

There are 4 possible outcomes in my house, all of which happen regularly, because the couch where I usually read is in front of the TV:

1. The movie is not really "good" i.e. I'm not interested it; I will read my book while my husband watches the movie.

2. The movie may be good but I choose to read the book anyway. Nevertheless it grabs my attention and I half-watch it while half-reading my book and end up satisfied with neither.

3. The movie may be good but I choose to read the book anyway. About 15 minutes in I realize I want to watch it and start watching the movie while annoying my husband with questions about the first 15 minutes.

4. It's a movie I have been waiting to see and really want to see. I put down my book and watch the movie, because the movie will go back to netflix before I have to return my book to the library.
