It's dependent on the book. The vast majority of books these days have page numbers, but there are a few that don't.

I don't see the page number - on any book - as one of the options on my Paperwhite 1 either, including for those books that do have page numbers - i.e. if I tap on top of the screen, I do see all the data (time left in book, time left in chapter, on page XXX of YYY, locations, percentage), but it's not one of the options that is always displayed on the bottom of the page.

No, it changed with the PW2. There will almost certainly be a firmware update for the PW1 at some point in the next few months that gives it the same UI as the PW2.

Ahh, thanks - that is good to know. I usually use the time left in chapter option now, but wouldn't mind seeing the page number for books that have it (but I don't want it enough to replace my very good PW1 with PW2!).

Did you try pressing on the bottom left corner - mine changes from page to position and back?
