I love paperwhite but I prefer using my nokia phone for night reading, although it has very small screen compared to PW and my android phone, it has lowest of brightness without loosing visibility (reading on lower light levels 1-5 isn't wonderful on PW for me). Kindle is awesome in daylight, just like paper and manga on it is more enjoyable than on laptop screen.

Try reading on 8 in the dark. It's what I use and it's perfect. 5-1 is too low and gives me eye strain. |

Actually a big reason why I decided to go back to the Kindle Basic was the green light blotches that everybody complained about on these forums when I first got mine back in October. I'm surprised that many people who had issues with it have changed their view and seem to love it now. It seemed like a regular PW hate fest around here back when it first came out. What brought you around? Can someone speak to that. I'm just curious since I haven't on these forums since October.
I don't think the PW is a bad device, there was a lot I actually like about it and haven't sworn it off for good (my Mom got one a while back and it works really well for her). I'd love to hear anybody's opinion on why they changed their mind. |

What light setting were you using? When the light up enough you can't tell the difference. It's only when it's way down you notice the extra layer.

I don't even notice the extra layer when I'm reading on an extremely low setting. The screen is always crisp and uniform. :\

I've tried and happily used most forms of e-reader - from Palm to Laptop to Tablet to LCD ereaders to E-Ink devices going as far back as the Kindle V1 and even the Haveron at one point. The Paperwhite is Superior to all I've tried, and the integrated light is a ++ bonus - Like many others I leave it on all the time - it makes the page that much whiter and I keep it at a level that it doesn't change the screen when I move from bright light into shadows - about 11 - 12 .
Go the paperwhite. You will not regret it. |

If you were going to disable the front light, why did you get the front lit version in the first place?
(I love my paperwhite - and it has no color blotches that I can see) |

There are some small blotches on the bottom of the screen, but they aren't green. They don't bother me, though. |

Officially, you can't disable the light, but if you set it to 0, it will be so weak that you can't actually see it except in complete darkness. If I remember correctly, there is a hack that can be installed after you jailbreak the Kindle, and then you can actually disable the LEDs completely.
A quick search found this: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=200266 Perform at your own risk. I've never jailbroken my Kindle or tested hacks such as this one. |

KPW vs. Non-frontlit Kindle:
In my case, a K3, which is close to the current basic Kindle. Mezzo-mezzo. I like the other features of the PW, faster processor, etc. I miss the page turn buttons on the K3. The frontlit screen is a nice-to-have under some conditions. I'm not sure it would be a deciding factor. The $50 price difference didn't matter that much to me, but for many people, I doubt it would be money well spent. YMMV. Jack Tingle |
