Wow, lots of responses.

This would be very simple to implement. Treating the directory structure as variables and placing a metadata file in the root directory that informs the program of a non-default directory structure would solve the problem.

For now, I've gone and edited all of the "Author" fields to hold the titles and edited the title fields to contain the authors, so now I can see the books the way I want to in my dropbox. Now, let me modify the name of my columns to that I can change the name of the author field to say "title" and the title field to say "author"...

I'm glad you got a method that worked for you. But if you had investigated the Save to disk feature mentioned in posts 2, 5, 6 and 7 all of that editing would not have been needed.

Like I said, I'm already using calibre portable inside of my dropbox. Space is limited in there, duplication of data is unacceptable. Especially because I mostly read textbooks and non-fiction books, some of which have very large file sizes.

Someone has not peeked inside Metadata.db. The path to the format is there.
Making it (the linkage) fairly ROBUST is why calibre wants/needs total control of the Library folder.

If the OP can code their alternative and have it perform (robustly) as good or better, I am quite sure the code would be up for consideration.

Remember: It must work as WELL on all 3 OS.

Dear Ford:

Please add the ability to change the configuration of the engine. When I'm sitting on the engine block as I'm driving down the road, I can't reach the drive train while I'm pumping the pistons by hand, not to mention that I have no place to put my feet. While you're at it, please add a windshield in front of the engine because the one behind it does me no good.

I know, everyone says I should just sit behind the steering wheel and drive that way, but that doesn't work with the way I like to do things.

It would be simple to implement. I would do it myself, but I'm not a car guy.

Anyone can download the Calibre source (for free), and modify it to do what they want it to do - but I guess they'd have to be software guy
