Via Dolorosa by Ronald Malfi http://www.amazon.com/Via-Dolorosa-ebook/dp/B00756ALXI/

Quote:
PAINTER, SOLDIER, HUSBAND, GHOST

Lieutenant Nick D’Nofrio is back from the war, but he is not home. The dead are on the other side of the world, but they haunt him daily. He tries to be a husband to his new wife, Emma, but he can’t connect with other people. He is obligated to paint a mural at the Paradis d’Hôtel, but only horrors spring from his imagination. Nick suffers for his art, for himself, for the guilt of his painful secret…

The memory of war follows Nick D’Nofrio to the the Paradis d’Hôtel where he encounters a spectral Spanish beauty, a mysterious jazz musician, and a ghost from his troubled, violent past. As his marriage crumbles and his sanity spins out of control Nick is forced to face his demons, the worst of which may be himself.

Darling by Brad Hodson [Bad Moon Books / Evil Jester Press]

Quote:
Raynham Place has been home to a number of mysterious occurrences. From its start as a battlefield through its time as a tuberculosis hospital and even in its current incarnation as an apartment complex, the grounds here have been awash in blood and instability. When two friends decide to move in to Raynham together, a wound that they share opens wide and threatens their sanity. But they're not alone. Something is off here at Raynham, something that goes beyond the local legends of ghosts and serial killers and Black Hounds, something that gets inside of everyone who ever lives here. When a sacrifice is made, the first freely given in ages, the truth behind Raynham's legends finally surfaces and the building fills to bursting with all the dreams of Hell...

The Dark by James Herbert (who died today) is at BOB in EPUB for $.84 with a $.15 rebate. Originally published in 1980.

Quote:
It came like a malignant shadow with seductive promises of power. And somewhere in the night...a small girl smiled as her mother burned...Asylum inmates slaughtered their attendants...in slimy tunnels once-human creatures gathered. Madness raged as the lights began to fade and humanity was attacked by an ancient, unstoppable evil... Remember with fear...

The Thing in the Mist (Redrum Horror) by John S. Glasby (Author), Edmund Glasby (Foreword)

Quote:
THE THING IN THE MIST: Selected Stories by John S. Glasby

Redrum Horror #6

STRANGE. WEIRD. EERIE.

Between 1954 and 1967, British publisher Badger Books released over one hundred issues of the horror pulp digest Supernatural Stories, nearly half of which were written by one of the most prolific genre writers of his time, John S. Glasby.

Here, collected for the first time, are eleven of Glasby’s finest contributions to Supernatural Stories, tales of otherworldly terror and ancient evil in the Lovecraftian tradition. Guaranteed to chill and delight, The Thing in the Mist is a must-read for any fan of classic pulp horror.

This edition also includes an introduction by the late Glasby’s son, Edmund Glasby, and an informative afterword by longtime colleague Philip Harbottle.

Free from Dark Regions Press: Glimpses: The Best Short Stories of Rick Hautala. 24 stories

Quote:
One of 2012’s HWA Lifetime Achievement Award Winners, Rick Hautala has a writing career that spans more than three decades. From Moondeath, his first novel published in 1980, to the republication of his best-selling novel The White Room (DRP, 2012) and his forthcoming “Little Brothers” novella Indian Summer (CD Publications, 2012), his novels and short stories have entertained millions of readers around the world.

Now comes Glimpses, a career-spanning “best of” collection that brings together twenty-four stories, including eight from each of Rick’s critically-acclaimed collections Bedbugs and Occasional Demons, and eight previously uncollected stories.

And Glimpses delivers what it promises—quick glimpses into the deepest shadows of our lives, around unfamiliar corners of streets we think we know, and down the darkest alleys of strange cities where readers will have to face their worst fears and their most unnerving nightmares.

Of course, Glimpses wouldn’t be a Rick Hautala collection if it didn’t included gorgeous original artwork—a wraparound cover and eight new illustrations—from award-winning artist Glenn Chadbourne.

So whether it’s in a haunted schoolhouse or an abandoned lighthouse, an iron bridge that spans a fast-moving river or a World War I battlefield, prepare yourself because you never know what you may catch a glimpse of … and by then, it may already be too late.

Saw this freebie on facebook and came over here to post it, but you beat me to it. Just want to add that the publisher made it free in honor of Rick Hautala, who passed away 2 days ago on the 21st.

While googling info about Rick Hautala, I also found out that David B. Silva died a couple of weeks ago, too. Not a good month for the horror genre.

I read Silva's first novel when it was published in paperback. I remember - about 30 years later - enjoying it.

David B. Silva
James Herbert
Rick Hautala

--- Let's hope it stops there, for a long time, at least.

October Roses by Mark Allan Gunnells
[Bad Moon Books / Evil Jester Press]

Quote:
Unusual things have a tendency to happen at Limestone College. Especially around Halloween. When Caitlin's boyfriend gave her the roses, she thought it was a sweet, romantic gesture...until the nightmares started. And the murders. Had Caitlin somehow tapped into the mind of a killer...or had she become a killer herself? With the help of her friends and a campus security guard, Caitlin must figure out what is going on before she loses her mind and anyone else loses their lives.

"Mark Allan Gunnells is a writer who knows what makes a good story. With a deft hand, he delivers every note perfectly, whether it be horror, suspense or introspective moments from his characters. When you've got a Gunnells book in your hand, you know you're in for a good time." - Benjamin Kane Ethridge, Bram Stoker Award-winning author of BLACK & ORANGE and BOTTLED ABYSS

Deep Cuts: Mayhem, Menace, & Misery [Evil Jester]

Quote:
Warning: cuts may be deeper than they appear.

19 short horror stories to give you shivers plus 60 recommendations for powerhouse tales written by women—those bloody stylings and chainsaw rhythms that have lain hidden like deadly gems among other great works.

"Deep Cuts smartly sidesteps the bloody 'women in horror' debate and puts its money where its mouth is. This fantastic collection, featuring both genders, pays tribute to the best dark tales told by women. A deeply cerebral experience that is at times honest and intimate, but always chilling." —Mercedes M. Yardley, author of Beautiful Sorrows

Cover art by Anja Millen.
