That strap is exactly what I did not like about the stock case: it stretches and twists and it is clear to me that it will eventually snap. Nor do I like the idea of attaching velcro which, with the difference in shape between the curved Kindle edge and the flat edge of the case, requires that the case be bent. I have the M-edge which, in addition, is better leather and has a slot both for sheets of paper and a pen.

all i want is a rubber wrap around case like people have on their iPhones, or Wii controllers...something rubber to absorb shock if...when..i drop it.

or

the current case makes it nearly impossible to press the buttons on the left side of the screen

The current case works best when folder back around flat and then secured with the elastic band. Then you can wedge your right hand between the back and the folder-over front and it's held securely and all the buttons are easy to reach with your thumb (assuming you are right-handed AND the Kindle is fitting securely in the case, which mine has never really done).

I have the M-Edge leather on order - we'll see how well that works when it comes.

After dropping my Kindle a couple of times (I read in bed and it will fall from my limp hand to the floor if I'm too close to the edge of the bed) the little plastic tab that holds the Kindle in the case had slipped almost totally into its slot and didn't stick out enough to secure the Kindle. So, with my trusty tweezers, I pulled it out, dribbled a generous amount of super glue onto its edge, then slipped it back in and pressed tightly on the edge of the suede until the glue had adhered. No more problem with the Kindle coming out of the case.

Question about the M-Edge cover: It doesn't look like there's a slot in the back for the power on/off switch. Does anyone know if there is? Also... I'm a Kindle noob, should I be switching the power on and off, or using the screensaver mode when I'm done reading? How do I invoke the screensaver mode?

TIA

In the M-edge leather case, the upper left, lower left and lower right corner fit into secure wedge-like pockets. The upper right corner has a stretchy band, partly covered with leather, that you slip off to lift the corner of the Kindle to access that on/off and wireless switches. Even with that stretchy band slipped off (as mine is most of the time), the Kindle is pretty securely held by the other three pockets.

The pluses of the M-edge case are that it does hold the Kindle very securely and it has some pockets on the inside cover that are good for storing the SD card, some index cards and a thin pen. The minuses (which are minor minuses) are that the leather is a bit glossier than I'd like, and I actually miss the elastic band on the Kindle cover - I like to make a place to wedge my hand to hold the whole thing by folding the front cover back and using the elastic band to secure it.

I usually leave the Kindle in sleep mode (either I push the alt-Aa or I just put it down and it puts itself to sleep), but I try to shut it off once or twice a week, too - I figure that my laptop and desktop start to misbehave when they've been left running for days and days and there is no reason to encourage that kind of behavior in the Kindle, especially since it shuts off quickly and boots fairly quickly.

EDIT: I also bought the SFBags/Waterfield Travelcase for the Kindle, so I could put the Kindle and my laptop in my backpack when I travel. The Travelcase holds the Kindle (with the stock cover or the M-edge cover), the charger, the earphones and my iPod. The Travelcase zips shut at the top and is pretty tough and padded, so it protects the Kindle and the ports.

I really like the M-edge case, and I should point out that you can also fold it back and secure the front cover by fitting the tab into the front slot (the two sides will then be facing one another, so to speak). I never liked the elastic strap because I felt it would stretch out of shape - no matter what I did when I was closing the case, the strap twisted and I then had to carefully untwist it. I never turn the Kindle off (I never turn my phone off either), I just don't see what harm can result from leaving it on.

New M-Edge Protege Kindle 2 cover...

I just ordered this cover and it is supposed to have the hinge system to hold the new Kindle 2 securely. I sure hope so. I have never owned a Kindle and the new Kindle 2 is sort of small and I am afraid I will drop it when I read in bed on my side! My son (almost 17) has totally taken over my Kindle. He made fun of me when I ordered it.... HELP! I want to be nice, but I SO want to read, myself. His BD is coming up and I suggested he ask for one! This Kindle is the most wonderful invention, ever!

I am a very conservative sort of brown/black person but I ordered this cover in Marbeled Red! It looked so rich and beautiful in the picture. It won't ship until March 9th, though... I will let you know how I like it.
