I just tried it--I turned my PW "off" (held the button until I got a white screen) and then closed the cover. When I opened the cover, it woke up just the same as if I had put it to sleep.

Which just proves what HarryT said about it not being switched off but just in sleep mode with a blank screen is spot on.
