Do you guys know if I hook up the Kindle to my account to put my games on it then put it back on his if they will work? I wish I could transfer them over to his account permanently. I have no interests in playing games on eInk.
As long as they don't have to "phone home," they should. I haven't used many eink games. I know books aren't a problem. Try it, if it doesn't work, delete them. I *think* they will work.

I realize this is a moot point because your hubby bought it but I needed to add that you can't ship ereaders via the USPS outside the US as of May something 2012. The postal regulations changed regarding anything with batteries including lithium ion etc. No ereaders, no iPods, no cell phones with batteries, no laptops and the like.

USPS Bans Shipments of Batteries

The only way for them to go internationally is via a courier. Big bucks!

Ouch! That means it will probably cost more for shipping than the buyer paid for the used Kindle. Of course you can always ship in an unmarked box and fail to tell them what it is. With my luck I would get busted for trying to mail a Li-Ion battery to the UK while the guy behind me in line gets away with mailing Semtex are C-4 to Germany!

I just got off the phone with USPS. They said there is a new law going into effect January 2013 to ALLOW shipping personal items that contain batteries. They said you are supposed to remove the battery before shipping, and the recipient is supposed to buy their own battery.

At this time, only shipments from a manufacturer are allowed to contain lithium batteries.

When I brought up the fact that this is NOT a removable battery, and in fact is permanently glued inside, they said in that case to bring it to your local post office so they can make sure all the "proper forms" are filled out correctly.

Apparently the "no battery" policy is for REMOVABLE batteries. Anyway, for safe shipping a lithium battery should be discharged to between 40% and 70%, and the kindles have a diagnostics menu option that will do that for you.

Shipping to most countries from the US is $38 flat rate. If you ship the original kindle box, you need to wrap it in paper to cover any labels (such as the serial number bar code label). You need to fill out a customs form at the post office. For some countries, you need to list "used device, gift, less than $100 value" to prevent import problems for the recipient (depending on country).

Man, you know, I knew about the new battery rule, but completely forgot about it, when I shipped hubby's old Nook off to his niece this summer! I also didn't realize that about the charge level and had fully charged it the day before shipping, but since the old Nook never kept a charge long anyway ... Oh well, learned a new thing from this post and she did get it safe and sound. Last I heard, she was happily reading some Sherlock Holmes I'd put on it.

Hey Geek!

I knew there was going to be a change in 2013. I believe it was also detailed in the link I gave. Second paragraph. I sell stuff online & have to know these things. There's tons to keep up with believe me!! Oy! The thing though is, if they catch you, you're in big trouble. I can't take that risk. I ship with them. I drive into the US from Canada to do so & it would be a far bigger headache than I want to ever deal with. There's enough paperwork to cross an international border with commercial goods. Breaking postal reg's is really NOT something I want to toy with. Nor do I even want to begin to entertain what would be required to ship the battery item Internationally. It's hurting my head just thinking about it.

The other thing is the reality of the situation. You spoke to someone who said removable batteries. Ok fine sure. A reader or iPod battery isn't meant to be user removable. Lets leave the tinkerer's experiments discussion out of it. Try telling it to the postie on the other side of the counter that the battery in the reader or the iPod isn't removable like say, a laptop battery could be. He's simply going to read NO ereaders and NO iPods. He's not going to call for clarification. He's going to interpret it how he sees fit & tell you to hit the road. Then you're SOL.

They can ship no problem inside the US but not outside. Now think about it for a second. When you fill out paperwork for an International shipment you have customs docs. You have to detail whats inside the box. Now you're talking about mail fraud and customs fraud by falsifying legal documents. I don't know about you but I'm not willing to do that. I love coming to the US and don't wish to lose the priviledge or the ability to use USPS instead of Canada Post.

No, ignore that

On ebay the K3+3G used seem to be going for $75 to $80.
I don't know though how old they are then there's that whole unlock stuff. Which I guess means jailbreak. It's all very confusing.
I'm not sure what that "unlock stuff" means, but just ignore it. I think that is a term used for cellphones without passwords.

I have sold many used eReaders on eBay. If you include lots of pictures and a detailed description, you will do fine. Probably around $100.

This is turning into a very informational thread! It's good things are going to change in 2013 but what about this Christmas?!?

I've only once sent something overseas and that was years ago. Hubby was stationed in Korea. I used the base's post office and I had a nice military wife who'd been through it all holding my hand at the time. There was forms to fill out then too. I think it cost around $40 to ship the box which contained his DreamCast, games, some CDs and a few books.

Even though I am not selling my Reader because hubby bought my K3 the info in this thread will help others. I know there are alot of people wanting to sell theirs with all the new toys coming out.

My reader will be here tomorrow! I Love that Amazon now has a warehouse in Chattanooga since last year. It makes to two days shipping turn into overnight.

It doesn't make any sense to me either why was it ok to ship in April 2012 but not May 2012 to January 2013 or thereabouts. Hubby & I wondered mildly if it had anything to do with the Olympics because it's not the USPS it's the International Postal Regulations.

And yes, as Isles8008 says, just ignore the locked/unlocked thing on eBay. It's just their terminology. It's generic in their electronics category item specifics but obviously doesn't apply to things like readers. Describe the item well with lots of pictures and people will buy stuff.

I bought many of my kindles from ebay, and in general regarding kindles, "unlocked" meant no special offers. But there is a LOT of inaccuracy, such as claiming a kindle is a DX Graphite with 9.7-inch eink pearl display, and then receiving a K3 instead. It took 3 tries to finally get a REAL DXG. For the others, I got partial refunds from the sellers if I chose to keep it (which I did) because they were "substantially not as described". You really cannot trust the descriptions or the photos, and having a dialog with the vendor before bidding does not often help either (they usually say their description is correct).
