The Fluribus Authoritative Listing of Standard English (FALSE) defines subtle as "apt to travel via submarine."

The fly-by-night dictionaries tend to say "difficult to understand". "Crafty or sly" can also be found.

Of course, given enough time I could probably give you a bigger document than you want to read filled with such quotes. I'll list three for now, but situational.

#1: In 1 Kings chapter 20 of the Judeo-Christian Bible, the King of Israel has just received a terrible threat from a foreign power. The threat from Ben-Hadad was, "May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely, if enough dust remains in Samaria to give each of my men a handful." The king's answer is amazing: "The king of Israel answered, "Tell him: 'One who puts on his armor should not boast like one who takes it off.'" (Quotes from the New International Version)

#2: C.S. Lewis is so quotable that so much of what the man wrote could wind up here. The following example is from the Problem of Pain and expresses his own humility and profound wisdom all in one passage.

"I must add, too, that the only purpose of the book is to solve the intellectual problem raised by suffering for the far higher task of teaching fortitude and patience I as never fool enough to suppose myself qualified, nor have I anything to offer my readers except my conviction that when pain is to be borne, a little courage helps more than much knowledge, a little human sympathy more than much courage, and the least tincture of the love of God more than all."

#3: In Orson Scott Card's Shadow series, Bean, a military leader responds to the death of a close friend. There is something about the sad harness of this scene that I love.

"Then they turned to Bean and saluted him. Sharply. In best military fashion. No pity. Just honor. He returned their salute the same way--no gratitutde, just respect."

But Sam turned to Bywater, and so came back up the Hill, as day was ending once more. And he went on, and there was yellow light, and fire within; and the evening meal was ready, and he was expected. And Rose drew him in, and set him in his chair, and put little Elanor upon his lap.
He drew a deep breath. "Well, I'm back," he said.

"Gospodin," he said presently, "you used an odd word earlier--odd to me, I mean..."

"Oh, 'tanstaafl.' Means ~There ain't no such thing as a free lunch.' And isn't," I added, pointing to a FREE LUNCH sign across room, "or these drinks would cost half as much. Was reminding her that anything free costs twice as much in long run or turns out worthless."

"An interesting philosophy."

"Not philosophy, fact. One way or other, what you get, you pay for."

“I could not become anything; neither good nor bad; neither a scoundrel nor an honest man; neither a hero nor an insect. And now I am eking out my days in my corner, taunting myself with the bitter and entirely useless consolation that an intelligent man cannot seriously become anything, that only a fool can become something.”

Dostoyevsky

Let's have 'The Canterville Ghost' explaining little girl his wish:

'Far away beyond the pine-woods there is a little garden. There the grass grows long and deep, there are the great white stars of the hemlock flower, there the nightingale sings all night long. All night long he sings and the cold, crystal moon looks down and the yew tree spreads out its giant arms over the sleepers.'

Seems like no one else saw it.

There are some very good quotes here. It is a little bit sad that they are now thus spread "over the whole forum" and not collected in one thread.

"To make up for all I have forgotten, there is this that I have acquired, and I call it sophistication since it is not quite the same thing as learning. It is the flexible armour of doubt in an age when too many people are certain."

George Orwell - Down and out in Paris and London, my alltime absolute favorite book...

- “It is curious how people take it for granted that they have a right to preach at you and pray over you as soon as your income falls below a certain level."

- “Poverty frees poor people from ordinary standards of behaviour, just as money frees people from work.”

-"Dirt is a great respecter of persons; it lets you alone when you are well dressed, but as soon as your collar is gone it flies towards you from all directions.”

My favourite TDKR quotes:

This would be a good death... But not good enough.

There are seven working defenses from this position. Three of them disarm with minimal contact. Three of them kill. The other-- [KRAKK] --hurts.

You don't get it, boy. This isn't a mudhole... It's an operating table. And I'm the surgeon.
