I'm reading this thread with interest as I will be selling my Paperwhite in a couple of weeks - when I decide whether to replace it with a Sony or Kobo.

I bought my PW direct from Amazon but had it shipped as Gift so it wasn't registered to my account. As I always sideload books and never use wifi, my PW has never been registered with Amazon even though it was purchased in December 2012. It never occurred to me before reading this thread, but now I am hoping that if/when the new owner goes to register it, it will go through OK - bearing in mind that is has been 9 months since the sale and has never been registered or connected to wifi. If anyone has any experience with registering a Kindle (for the first time) so long after the original purchase date, I would be interested to know if there were any problems.

Why don't you register it now, then de-register it. Then you'll be sure that it'll be OK for the new owner.

Thanks for your reply ..... a reasonable suggestion for most people, except that I prefer not to have any devices from Amazon registered to my account, which is why I never registered it in the first place of course. I'll just hope it will all be OK, after all, if necessary, I have got the original Amazon receipt from when I purchased it.

Since it's never been registered, I don't think there would be any problem. The only way it could get on the blacklist is if you reported it. I doubt very much that with all the Kindles sold Amazon is going to be proactive about finding out why (or if) a Kindle hasn't been registered. Just check it against the blacklist, approve it and on down the road.

(of course, that's just my two cents worth...)

Oh hey guys, seems like my thread got popular after a year
Just wanted to tell you what happened, the seller replaced the unit with a different one. In my country, the forgotten stuff at an airport gets auctioned after several months. So seller bought many kindles to sell them over internet, not being aware of kindles can be blacklisted. But I couldnt be sure if the replaced kindle would be blacklisted after a while so I asked for a refund, and with some cut, I got my money back.
Then, I bought a new kindle from amazon, and I couldnt even get it because my friend was in vacation in US, and I got it mailed to his apartment, then, he got it stolen, I couldnt even open my new kindle's box
Then, finally I could get a working, not blacklisted kindle over internet from my country but I broke its screen as soon as possible, now I'm waiting for a replacement screen from china, hoping I could use my kindle happily eventually

That's some catalogue of misfortune, have you annoyed any gremlins lately?

I hope you have better luck with your new screen.

After seeing how thin the screen assemblies are, I never used a Kindle without a case again. If you DO get a replacement screen, please take some pictures of the inside for us.

I've added a couple links to teardowns I found on youtube to the wiki.

Good luck!

I was told they are not aloud to go to the plane or talk about lost items to the flight attendants. I called in the airlines and went through all the procedures of filling out the lost items form immediately. I called Amazon to deactivate my Kindle and was told that if someone tried to register the Kindle then there would be a single showing them that my Kindle was found. The Kindle you have could be mine and Amazon should have been able to have you turn it on so they could track the account. I have been trying to check the Houston Lost and found and just like everyone else...I get nowhere. I wonder if the place actually exists. = ) I decided to check the internet to find out who might be selling used Kindles and found your thread and the Mobile Read. My Kindle was in a red case and I lost it on June 11, 2013. It was Lorene's Kindle. Anyway, sorry abut what happened to you and I wanted to thank you for trying to get the word out about stolen and lost Kindles. If there were more good and honest people like you then we wouldn't have this thread going on.
I did the same thing in early August -- left my K3 (Kindle Keyboard) in the seat-back pocket. Within 2 hours, I was talking to a lady at the airport lost-and-found. The airline said it was all up to the airport. I don't know where the plane was headed, so I couldn't file a lost-and-found notice there.

After a couple of weeks, I've given up ever getting it back, so I just pressed the button to buy a replacement from an Amazon reseller. (I don't like the Paperwhite versions.)

My Kindle did have all my contact information -- particularly my e-mail address. But whoever found the Kindle either hasn't looked at that info, or just isn't honest enough to contact me to return it to me. I immediately de-registered it, before I thought to get the serial number, so I cannot now report it lost or stolen to Amazon.
