Of course you can record to it - just get the correct machine, which will record as well as play. Pretty cheap now, around £100 in UK.
You can also get one with a hard-drive (470 hrs worth) as well as being a DVD player & recorder.
I've still even seen a VHS/DVD recorder/player !!

I have mixed feelings about this one. I love being able to flip through some books and read a passage or chapter here and there (particularly non-fiction, but fiction as well for a re-read or looking for a certain passage/quote).

But I love the ability to electronically search for specific words which is impossible with a paper book.

in some cases it's best to have a copy or each paper and ebook!

In my opinion if you are a true retronaut you should be playing 78 rpms on a His Master's Voice phonograph.

I think what impressed me was how I was touched and responded to the book as an artifact. I love books and a physical book is just a completely different experience than an ebook.

There is always a small group of users who refuse to switch to a new technology. Maybe I should include myself in this group. I'm still refusing to get a new digital TV.

Digital TV sucks. It only exists to allow TV companies to shove more channels into the same bandwidth.

Sure, in principle the picture quality is better because it's digital, but then the TV companies compress the heck out of it and the slightest interference completely destroys the picture. I remember watching a TV version of Moby Dick a few years ago where the picture would break up into garbage every time a wave crashed over the ship because it was so heavily compressed.

You can use a DVD recorder, but not a lot of people do, it's considerably more bother than VHS. People are more likely to use a DVR. I ditched cable years ago, if I want to record something from OTA TV, I record it using the TV tuner on my PC.

More bother? No way.

I have a combo VCR and DVD recorder. Using the DVD recorder is as easy as popping in a blank disc (I use RW discs if I'm just time-shifting don't intend to keep the program). You set the recording speed and the timer just as you would on a VCR, and that's it. Where's the bother?
