If you're getting crashes in windows explorer as well, windebug wont help. The easiest thing to do in this kind of situation is to re-install windows.

I still recall with a shudder all the times I've had to re-install windows for my family members before I moved them all to linux.

Could be flaky memory. I had flaky memory in this computer. It was a program I was running that really stressed things and cause the memory error to show up more often. I was able to send the memory stick in for warranty replacement. Since your computer is new, maybe run a memory test overnight and see if it finds anything.

Hi Mr Wolf -
Did that a few days ago along with the viral scans - all ok
Yesterday did a command prompt system scan - found some corrupted files but the system wouldnt let me get at them - so am currently repopulating my computer after a windows reinstall ........sigh 4hrs and counting
in fact just finished reinstalling and repopulating calibre from back up..! Now to check that sony recognition problem ;-)
Oh and yes - i have tried linux but it requires too much computer knowledge to make it easy for a dunce like me - tried Ubuntu 6 and ubuntu 12 with no joy. oh for a worthy competitor to microsoft..........

Ok - saga continues.......
Google is my friend!!
Error found and reads

Lots of research later it looks like there may be a shell extension conflict with a corrupt .dll file
.cpl No Property Handler Windows Shell Common Dll 6.1.7601.17514 (win7sp1_rtm.101119-1850) Microsoft® Windows® Operating System Microsoft Corporation No No No No No No C:\Windows\system32\shell32.dll {66742402-F9B9-11D1-A202-0000F81FEDEE} 1/08/2012 6:07:26 AM 14/07/2009 2:53:38 PM Yes A 14,172,672 No

looks like this is the culprit - but it is in the system shell and loathe to disable it.
despite a recent full reinstall this little nasty seems to be the prob that persists.
I havent been able to get the same message for calibre but I am betting there is a link....and I think it is when I eject calibre as i can reproduce the explorer crash by ejecting usb flash drive..

will keep you posted!

Does that mean anything to you Kovid?

These crashes seem to involve multiple .dlls - have to find the common thread and THEN we can deal with the sony recognition this thread originally started as......

No, not really. QtGui4.dll is the dll that implements the UI toolkit calibre uses.
